    Default Triton respirator

    Hi all,

I'm now the proud owner of the powered respirator (just waiting for initial battery charge before I start using it). Still on special at Bunnies in Wagga Wagga for $197. Just a quick question though; what's the best way to clean and keep clean the faceshield? I suppose one way would be to put it on a shelf and just look at it .

They do get marked a fair bit because they're just plastic but Triton sell replacements. I don't think they were very expensive, maybe around $20 from memory. I haven't had to buy one yet though.

Just be careful when you put it down etc and it will last for ages. I wipe it over with a soft cloth, and maybe some glass cleaner like they have for the car windows etc (mainly water/metho mix)

Thanks Gumby. The biggest problem I've had with other things (like glasses), has been the spray when using finishes. I can't wait to try it out though.

I haven't tried this but if you are spraying, why not put some Glad Wrap over the face shield first.

BTW,. I don't think the Triton is rated to protect properly against fumes etc. Just wood dust.

It's mainly from the Shellawax finish when I'm turning. My shed glassess have got so many spots on them I can't see proberly anymore. The glad wrap idea sounds good though. I think I'll try it and see how it goes. Other than that, I suppose I'll just have to find an extra strong glass cleaner.

Grizz, Bunnings & no doubt other stores have clear pvc ("vinyl") sheet in various thicknesses, the thinnest is .1 or .2 mm I think.

What about cutting a piece of this stuff and applying it to the faceshield, static "cling" should help it stay on - the same as protective clear sheets that come on mobile phone screens, camera LCDs, etc.

Should be easy to apply without wrinkles, fairly tough & easy to replace when needed.

If trying to fit a film to protect th visor, you will need to find a material that can stretch.

The visor is curved in 2 planes and so if your material can't stretch, it will have ripples that will hinder visibility and reduce the adhesive effectiveness.

I would try glad wrap first. Cheap, easily available and easy to replace. Mind you, every time it gets hit by flying bits of timber, it may mark, leading to a very short life.

I recall having a discussion with the engineers about this topic when the product first came out. Think they decided that making the replacement visors as cheap as they could was the best solution they could come up with.

If the visor was only curved on 1 plane, would have been a different story. That would have limited the visibility though.

Does any one have an idea as to how long the batteries last and what the recharging cycle is like. I may just pop down to hills on Manday and pick one up if theyare only $99.

The battery lasts well. You can be out there in the shed most of the day and it will keep going. At that price, it's an absolute bargain.

Well, gave it a workout today. All I can say is, fantastic. I turned some kwilla which usually leaves me sneezing and a nose running fit to win the Boston marathon. No problems at all today. Definately one of the better purchases I have made.

i wonder if you have considered making some sort of stand or bracket that would hold a rectangular sheet of transparent plastic in between you and the workpiece, (like some lathes already use)? It is a darn sight easier wiping off a flat sheet when you have finished. If you have it in slots then you could have several sheets and only clean them when you have none left.

Maybe find a secondhand desk lamp or paper holder with a flexible arm that you could make a perspex sheet for.

Also, those microfibre cleaning clothes are quite good for general cleaning, dunno how good they would be with gobs of wax on them though.
