    Default Triton Respirator - Ressurection

A couple of years ago, my trusty respirator started making noises, despite being cleaned out regularly. The screeching was starting to get distracting and battery life was down to about 5 minutes.

Until this afternoon, it had been sitting unused in frustration like that for nearly two years.

Thanks to Covid-19, I finally sat down and decided to see if I could fix it.

I started by stripping it down as much as I could - which is remarkably easy. I even went so far as to pull out the fan component and clean it all down with a brush and blow everything out with my vacuum set on reverse. I then used a can of compressed air to get everywhere else.

The batteries are NiCads, so I didn't hold much hope for saving them, and found these on eBay:

Battery Rebuild Pack For TRITON PRA001 Power Respirator Dust Collector Air | eBay

I put a few grains of graphite power into the fan motor around the bearing using a cottonwool bud, and started the fan, after blowing and wiping every single excess grain away. I stopped the motor, wiped and used compressed air again and repeated that process a few more times. I don't want to breath in graphite power. The squealing is gone and the motor runs smoothly and quietly.

While searching for replacements to resurrect my respirator I also came across these to replace the filter cartridges:

Protector Combination Respirator Filter Twin Pack | eBay

And a source of a replacement filter cover:

Triton Tools Replacement Prefilter Filter Suit Pra001 Dust Respirator Pra009 New | eBay

Despite not having purchased any of the above components (yet), I reassembled the respirator, and recharged it from flat. It ran for 41 minutes without a squeak until the last 20 seconds. The power dropped four times in that time, but it was still blowing a sufficient amount to be felt on my face up until the 39 minute mark.

Has anyone else got any good sources of parts?

Does anyone know of any other good sources of replacement parts:

I did not see anything here:

    Tool Spares Online. TRITON

Does anyone know of other filter cartridges that might be better, that would fit the Triton?

    Thanks,

    Craig

Currently P2 cartridges are WAAAAAY overpriced and/or unavailable because of COVID19.
I bought a new pair of P2 cartridges <$20 from Bunnings back in Jan.

As I still have the test flow ball and much more sophisticated testing gear I also tested my batteries and how blocked my 12 year old cartridges were and found both were fine.

You might want to look at my testing and mods etc here
Testing out the Triton Full face respirator

Although my batteries turned out to still be OK (they run for but I added a switch/plug so that a 7.4Ahr Li-ion battery pack could be easily appended to provide for longer time of operation.

And if you do go for replacement nicads or nimh batteries you should be able to get them for about $10 each, so $50 not the 80 in that ebay auction.

Well I put the respirator to good use today.

I am not sure if this is a common fault - after two years of not having used the respirator, I found the the nylon belt must have shrunk! It was really snug.

Try to get P3 filters if you can - P2 filters out only 95% of particles, whereas P3 filters out 99.97% of particles.

    Default Upgrade Triton prefilter

The original prefilter is a poor/cheap design, and blocks too quickly in dusty conditions. I would not waste $19.50 on another one of these. You can easily modify the unit to use a motor mower cardboard filter, with double the surface area. This gives better airflow for longer, even when the batteries are running down. I will post pictures and details as a new post, when I get time.
