The smallest member of the Triton router family
Hi All,
Reading the Oct/Nov 2010 issue of Woodcraft magazine I stumbled upon the advertisement shown below. More details in a few days time.
Have a great New Year,

Wonder what price point they will be on the market in... I want a small handheld router and love my big Triton in the router table
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Awww.....its a widdle baby Twiton.....
Sorry, but after my experiences with the MOF001 I won't be buying anything Triton ever again.
I too want a small handheld router, but I think I'll just save up for one of these:

Festool looks nice but its more than twice the price I paid for my big Triton and its only got a 1/4" collet. I want my handheld one with a 1/2" so I can use the same bits in the table and hand held
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

I know what you mean, but most of the operations I'd undertake with a small handheld router would be with 1/4" shank bits.
In the US of A they have some mini routers similar in design to our laminate trimmers, BUT with variable speed. DeWalt just bought out a very nice one that would do me for a mini router.....but needless to say we won't be getting it here in Oz.
As I've said before, its becoming increasingly tempting to just buy a medium-sized step-down transformer and start buying smaller powertools from the US...

I have had my TRA001 since 2002 and my MOF001 since 2007. I work principally in Jarrah and use one of the routers nearly every week. (While mostly a weekend woodworker - I also supply custom mouldings and trim to local painters and decorators.) I regularly clean both routers and have had NO problems with them.
So I'm eagerly awaiting the JOF001.
The JOF-001 was included in Triton's 2008/2009 catalogue, intended to be available in January 2009. However it was not produced following the events of 2008.
I'm hopeful that a 240v version won't be too far away now that the 120v version is tooled and now available (assuming the advertisement is correct).
Will post again when I hear back from the sources, but this may be a few days as they are all enjoying a break.

Yup - but at least I only have to buy each tool once !!
I'll keep my table-mounted MOF001 going as long as I can with the spares I've purchased (from the UK), but if the speed controller dies the friendship is over. It hasn't exactly had a hard life, and has been taken apart and cleaned regularly (a side effect of it breaking so often.....). The speed controller is a simple electronic part, so I have no idea why so many people seem to experience failures?? Design issue ?
The TRA001 is definitely more robust (especially the older build), but I wouldn't buy a new one in Oz as I have no confidence in the ongoing supply of spares. Once bitten and all that

Is the MOF even available in Australia?
Carbatec only seem to list the TRA on their website.

Good point - I bought my MOF before the Triton meltdown.
If Carbatec is supposed to be sole distributor for Triton in Australia, and they currently only offer the TRA001, what are the chances of them adding another smaller Triton router when they don't offer the MOF001?
Could be that they are dipping a toe into the water to assess demand for the Triton products, then they may expand their range later. Equally, if sales don't live up to expectations, they might quietly drop Triton altogether.....

I'm not sure. Are they paying for the "priviledge" of being sole distributor? If so, you would think they would supply every product they could get their hands on. How much trouble would it be to add a few extra items to the website? They wouldn't need to keep any inventory.
Maybe the MOF001 is currently only being manufactured for foreign markets? But you'd think the 240v UK version would work here. Or you'd think Carbatec would explain the reason for not stocking. It doesn't make any sense to me...
