Took delivery of lots of 8 m lengths of steel from Direct Steel of Dinmore today and started using my new steel cutter for the first time to cut the legs and in-feed and out-feed arms and another little job for my box trailer.

What a beauty! Easier and cleaner than cutting marshmallows with a sharp knife!

I cut the steel in my garage - no sparks, no mess, good clean, straight cuts and very quick.

It may not be a tool for every one but married to my beaut little Italian made GMC welder, it is sure suits my needs. It didn't when it was $450 but at the price that I paid, I am delighted.

I unpacked the cutter last night and gave it a test run...what a great tool...just sliced through the steel. Have to hand it to the designers, it has a design feature which I thought was a slight flaw until I read the manual.

When placing the square material in the 45° cutting slot, I wondered why the corner of the material did not go all the way to the cutting blade line. It stopped just the the left. Upon cutting you are left with a piece with a flat section (see 45 cut.pdf attached)

After making the second mitre cut and placing them together (see other pdf), you have a formed 'V' to lay down the weld in....BRILLIANT.

Very neat - the sort of thinking that made Triton.

You can get it to give either, although whether you are joining it with brackets or by welding, the flat isn't a detraction anyway.

If you head back in time we were rather dubious about Triton heading into steel - the influence of Hills at the time. However good engineering will always win me over. Pity this product didn't take off in Australia - as people are now experiencing, there was a reason why the demonstrators were enthusiastic about the steel cutter - once you've used one, you don't want to go back to a cut-off wheel.

At least the Americans are taking to it.

Maybe the Steel Cutter has a future in Australia too, with the number now being purchased from the website.

Cannot argue with that! It is a beautiful machine. 'Tis time that steel work became more civilised.

With the necessary premise that i just pulled it out of the box, admired it, and put it back, the problem I got is that it does not seem to provide for what i wanted to do, and have done manually: a v cut in the middle of a square beam so that I can bend it without the need for welding. The description said 45o cut, but did not say "only at the end of the piece". I'm not complaining about the machine, just about my ignorance. Is there any way to do it that I can't see?
