Triton Respirator
I live in the United Kingdom and a subscriber to a British woodworking list suggested that I might find advice about this matter here; I do hope that somebody will be able to help.
I won a Triton Respirator in the Raffle at my Woodturning Club.
I understand that these Respirators have been discontinued by Triton and spares are no longer available.
Although I've charged the cells they do NOT output sufficient energy to push the little ball above the fiduciary mark in the test manometer so I deduce that the battery needs replacing. I don't see that as an insurmountable problem for me since I used to teach electronics.
However, I first need to discover if replacement filters are available.
Can anybody help please?
My very best wishes for a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful, Successful, Prosperous and Stress-free New Year.

My Triton club has one new filter for sale - see here:
Classifieds – TOCACT
Very light to post.
This is the washable one shown in the manual
<cite class="_Rm">
The other filters are supposed to be industry standard ones.

Hi,
Did you replace all 5 cells? I made the mistake of only replacing the 2 I could see first attempt. Are you just after the primary filter or the canister ones?
RegardsHugh

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I have NOT yet replaced any of the cells since I want to find out about replacement filters before spending time and money rebuilding the battery pack.
I have the PRA001 Respirator; I do not know if Triton manufactured more than one model and, if so, whether they all use the same filters.
I hope that I'll be able to find out the specification of the filters to see if there's an equivalent available in the United Kingdom.
With best wishes and thanks again.

Hardknott,
The specification for the other filters is given in the manual. The washable one is PRA009, and I'm aware of only one type.

Hi Hardknott;
The manual gives two types of cartridge; a Protector brand RC64 (P1 class particulate) or a Cigweld brand 455481 (P2 class particulate). These two part numbers are Australian part numbers unfortunately which doesn't help you very much.
To find the UK equivalent I suggest you take one out and first of all visit B&Q if they have a PPE department. If not then you'll need to go to a supplier of PPE. These filters are of a universal design that are available worldwide so you will be able to find something that will fit.
The Protector cartridge is designed to fit over the hole in the filter body and is held in place by the spring inside the lid.
The welding cartridge is slightly different, it has a spigot end which fits through the hole in the filter body but is still retained by the spring in the lid. The manual shows the two types of filter cartridges on pages 6 & 7.
The lid does have a habit of warping so that some of the filtered air escapes around the join instead of being sent up to the helmet. Easy fix; black electricians tape!
One last thing I'll add; the prefilter is extremely good at stopping the majority of the dust anyway. I ran mine for about three years without needing to replace the cartridges; the only reason I no longer use it is because I can't get a replacement visor for it anymore.

Thank you, Chief Tiff, for taking the time to respond.
As I see it, it's NOT just the physical size but the specification of the filter in terms of what it will pass through.
I've read that the dust produced by sanding MDF (It may have a different name in Australia) is very fine and needs a filter which won't let those particles through.
With best wishes and thanks again.

I have a Triton and mine uses 2 P2 type filters. These filters are pretty standard as they are the same as used in the very commonly used half-face dust mask. l have also tested these filters. P2 filters are supposed to filter at least 95% of dust but I haves found that they do much better than this and are also excellent at capturing fine dust from things like mdf. I would not use the P1 filters.
