Triton TRA001 speed control problem, and the fix
This is about a TRA001 I got in 2001, so it's the older version of this router with no height mechanism accessible from the table and no way to add one. A plate with a lift is definitely in my future if I stick with this router.
I finished a new router table yesterday but as soon as I got the router into the table I started to have problems. Problem 1 was that I couldn't crank the router up using the round handle - too stiff. So I pulled it out again and took it all apart, cleaned a lot of sawdust (not that it has had heavy use) and gunk out of the *plastic* gears, lubricated the gears a little, made it smooth. I've covered the two openings at the base of the shafts now in an effort to keep more sawdust out.
Finally I got it back in the table but it was stuck on full speed, the speed dial had no effect at all. Pulling the top off I found a three-way spade connection that would do a dodgy car alarm installer proud. I pulled the spades out, crimped them closed just a tiny bit more so the spades needed a bit of force to get them back in and now it works again. If your speed control breaks, check those connections, they are easily accessible under the round top cover with the speed control unit lifted aside.

Unfortunately didn't work for me, had to buy part form England $100+ (on a unit with barley 3 hours!).
Trust and faith in Triton dropped dramatically.

Same here on an MOF001, but fortunately it hasn't let me down again after many hours of work. I don't know if there was a time when they had the speed controller fault and now it has been rectified as I have heard others say that they replaced their controller and it failed again shortly after. This made we hesitant to buy the new one for quite some time but I thought I would take the risk as I hated seeing an almost new router sitting under my bench virtually unusable. I really like the adjustment features on these routers and don't understand why other manufacturers haven't copied them.

Yes, Triton must steal a lot of sales because of the great application to a router table, which was the obvious winning reason it I purchased it. Reviews were quite good then, mine sat around with hardly any use for perhaps years, but I couldn't recommend one now.
Hopefully you're right, after time the problem has been sorted. If not I'll buy a remote speed controller next time, hard start won't matter to much when it's bolted down.

My router has recently operated at full speed when I first turn it on, ignoring the controller. I find that if I turn it off and then back on it reverts to normal. So it's definitely an electronics failure rather than dust. Looks like the beginning of the end though.

Yes mine did the same for a while, luck of the draw when it started as to which speed it decided to run at, regulated or flat out. I tried all the remedies that people suggested worked for them but none worked for me so had to bite the bullet in the end but haven't regretted it.
