Triton - The truth.
In another thread I challenged a member to justify certain claims he made that Triton conned a country. So far this hasn't happened and the thread was moderated.
I accepted such moderation however another newcomer quoted me out of context by cut and paste and that thread was, rightly so, also moderated.
The substantive issue was and always has been whether Triton conned this country about the place of manufacture of their products because their products do not have the place of manufacture stamped into or affixed to it.
I own a lot of Triton products. Not one of them has a label of place of manufacture on them. I also own a lot of other tools. Very few have such label of manufacture on them, the only ones are a few Sheffield steel made rulers and a couple of old handplanes. In fact it is exceedingly rare to find anything with a label of country of manufacture. All place this information on their packaging.
Some members claim that because they purchase their tools second hand without packaging they are not aware of the place of manufacture. This may be so but that doesn't mean that they are conned about place of manufacture.
Neither does that prove that Triton conned a country for, ever since they introduced power tools to their excellent range, they have stopped claiming that all their items are Australian made. They rightly claim that they are an Australian company, that they design their products here and that some are still made in Australia.
The Triton workcentre was brilliant and gave rise to this great Aussie company. It allowed many woodworkers to have affordable tools and much fine work is done with them. Their range of power tools were designed to actually remedy many shortcomings in existing power tools and place of manufacture is irrelevent as they are backed up with a fantastic warranty.
Although I have moved on to a tablesaw it galls me to see some new w*****s denigrating the good name of Triton without foundation and when challenged resort to personal abuse and drivel.
I repeat that I'm willing to debate the substantive issue, moderation by the Admins permitting, so either put up or shut up.
Peter.

Well said Sturdee. I too have a very 'Telecom Gold' coloured workshop, having only recently purchased other brands where there was no Triton equivalent (Bandsaw, lathe and metal working tools).
The ONLY problem that I've ever had (and it was rectified within 3 days by express post at no charge) was due to a problem with a part manufactured just down the road from you - in Victoria.
Just bought the Steel Cutter and have been able to cut four exactly equal table legs in 5 minutes out of a length of 30 x 30 x 2 RHS. Its BRILLIANT! I'm not sure whether it's made in Australia, but it does the job better that I'd hoped. For me Triton has always been about GREAT DESIGN, great back-up (if required) and the Triton Club.
I only have two wants now - the same brilliant level of customer service (refer above) and a way of Buying more Triton gear and GMC spares on the WEB at TritonSales.com.au. [now I'm dreaming of course]
Lastly Sturdee, your contribution to my woodworking experience has been significant and appreciated. Your frequent posts involving jigs, modifications and of course - the Sturdee cyclone have helped me to get more enjoyment out of the little time that I actually get in my shed each week.
Thank you.

Agreed. All the Triton stuff I have used has been well up to spec and to date I haven't had a problem.
Was anyone really conned on the Aussie made front? Well maybe they thought that the power tools were made in Australia, but more because they recollected the (accurate) claims made about the WC and then, without looking more closely, transferred that claim in their won minds to the power tools. In my book that is misleading yourself, not being misled. But even if they were misled, did they get an infeerior piece of equipment? Would it have been better if it had been made in Australia. In my view, NO. So how were they conned? What loss did they suffer?

I too second Sturdee's comments. I looked at many jigsaws before buying the new Triton and it's truly wonderful, well balanced and has all the features I would ever want. It's a dead-copy of an American design, except that it's yellow. It's probably made in China, but I don't really care. The Chinese products are getting better by the day and I suspect that they will go the same way as the Japanese did during the 60s. In the 60s we used to call it Japanese junk and look what we think now!
I think we should be careful of the Chinese cringe and Triton/GMC should be a big enough company to come clean about sources and designs.
The only negative aspect of this debate is that I really think that George's original premise of "aussie innovation" is probably dead. Triton is now just like the others in the pack.
I still love my Triton gear but I'm more prepared to look at the competition.dave

Sturdee,
I also agree about the gist of your post, but could I suggest that you edit a certain word in the second last sentence so that the moderators don't have to send this to the orange room... (even though it is Triton)<Insert witty remark here>

I was going to jump in on the Triton debate, then decided that it didn't actually qualify as a debate, it was just ill-informed sounding off. The following comments I will state as fact.
I bought my MK3 in 1981, it has just had it's 25th birthday.
At the time I got the MK3, table saws were so far out of reach they might as well have been on another planet.
My Triton has helped me build 2 extensions to my house.
Has fitted out my laundry, and 6 other rooms.
Has given me enormous pleasure, and provided me with great personal satisfaction, and pride in the work I achieved with it.
Has 'Made in Australia' printed on it, but would have been purchased regardless of point of manufacture.
Has given me pride in Aussie lateral thinking, and inventiveness.
Shines as one of the best of the products that have been conceived and constructed in Australia.
Still holds a vital place in my workshop, and is getting a new lease on life with the addition of some custom built jigs.
Will probably still be usable, when I am not.Chris

Peter how right you are , I sat that post last night after it had been locked and wondered why this arguement was reopened as I thought the subject had been covered well in the previous thread.

Don't know what all the fuss is about.
I have some orange stuff. It works. It does its job.
I have some Makita stuff. It works. It does its job.
I have some Vicmark stuff. It works. It does its job.
I have some GMC stuff. It works. It does its job.
Have some other brands. It works. It does its job.
Not one bit of it has a country of manufacture visible on it.
May have but gone by now.
Biggest problem round here is "Should I upgrade from Mk3 to 2000"?
