Default To All Triton Users - How To Cut This

    Howdy Guys,

I'm just seeking some advice on how to cut the following peice of timber. Please see picture below. Basically I have a plank of timber and want to cut 2 identical square holes in it. (Black squares in diagram below). I could use a jigsaw to cut the holes but would be left with a not so good finish.

Would a router be the best way in doing this, ie maybe with like a trench fitting? Any other ways?

    Cheers.

I would use a router to cut the straight lines and use a chisel to square off the corners.

I think I would use the jigsaw to cut close to the line and then finish with the router.

The other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

electric-green, Here is how I would do it.

    1) Build a template to the size you want using 5 pieces of material joined together as shown below.

    2) Cut out the Area in the piece of timber which will be your finished product using a jigsaw BUT stay a couple of mm inside from the edge.

    3) Use some double sided tape to fix your template to the final piece and then use a Flush Cutter Router Bit with a bearing

    4) Rout the 2mm excess by running the bearing around the template.

    5) Finally use a chisel to square up the corners which will be left rounded by the router bit.

    Hope this makes sense

It will be time consuming but doing it with a template and router to finish will give good result.

But that is what we do. Take our time.
