Vibration with new 1400 watt Triton Router
I was wondering if any body else has had the same problem or if it's just my uncanny knack at picking a defective product out of a pile of good ones.
I purchased the new 1400 watt router about two weeks ago and used it a few times with a 1/2 inch straight bit with no problems. The other day I drilled my router table plate to take the new router and also fitted the above The table winder (lovely bit of kit). When I affixed my cope and stick cutter into the router and switched it on the router vibrated quite a bit. Thinking that maybee the the collet had some crud in it I dismantled the collet and cleaned it all up - still the same problem. I then put in a rarther large flush trim bit in and affixed a Dial test idicator to the router base and clocked the runout of the bearing - Almost 20 thou, Not good. Chucked the same bit into the trust 20+ year old makita 3612 and indicated just over 1 thou.
300 Bills, two weeks and the router is back at an authorised service centre at the request of tritons help line. I hope its just a collet.
Will keep you postedI like cats but I couldn't eat a whole one :

I've had mine a month or so an have just finished a full set of cabinets for a laundry where is was used pretty much non stop for 3 days.
No dramas yet....
It's a bloody good router. It'd be hard to go back to the hitachi I had before it.
Let us know how you go....

An update to the router Saga:
I recieved a phone call from the autherised service centre telling me to collect my router and that nothing wrong could be found. The exact words where " it was to spec". When I questioned what spec was he um'd and ah'd and told me that they had chucked a 1/2 inch bit and found nothing wrong. I then re expained that the problem was with large bits at about 50 mm in dia and he said that they had nothing there that big to test it with and could i bring in one of mine.
Trip number 3 to the service centre and the chap chucks up my door making set. Switches on and feels the vibes and shuts it down saying that someting is wrong. He then starts up with the bit could be at fault which see's me halfway out the door with my 20+year old makita. Quick test and as smooth as (bloody noisy though).
OK he finally admits " we have a problem and goes on totell me that he will order a new armature and bearings but it could take as much as 6 weeks because GMC as notoriously slow.

Hmm, I'd be very tempted to tell them to "chuck" it allright. Money back, and go hunting for a new Makita or Bosch.

Can't say that I'd be at all happy with a brand new router being repaired, rather than it just being replaced. If it was something that developed during the warranty period, that is one thing, but for it to be like this straight out of the box really doesn't justify a '6 week repair job' for something you haven't really had a chance to use.
Now that the repairer has confirmed a major problem with such a long repair time in a new machine, perhaps it is time to feed that information back to GMC and see what they are prepared to do about it. I'd also mention the repairers inability to diagnose the problem- that is pretty unacceptable for an authorised repairer, and quite dangerous. At least you persevered with it."Clear, Ease Springs"

With all of your comments and a nights sleep I gave the triton (GMC) help line a call this morning and after 15 min listening to recorded blurb about how the red eye laser on a circular saw will give straighter cuts With improved surface finish I explained my story and said that it was a bit steep to be forced to wait so long when the product was defective from the start. They agree'd and will be sending a new router out to the service centre for a swap over.

As for tools that are faulty straight out of the box, this is a straight swap over whether the tools are GMC or Triton. I believe most power tool suppliers use the same warranty as I have had this experience with Makita and they gave me a new one.
Well done on convincing the team member Triton had a 30 day satisfaction warranty, this is so far from reality but you managed to convince him - so a win to you!!
