1/8 inch Berg profile questions
I have two with slightly different profiles. I think they are both the mortise type produced a different dates ( excuse the i phone photos)
Can any of the berg experts show me a picture of the difference between a 1/8 inch berg with the bevelled edge and the mortise edge.
How / where should i relieve the edge to "convert" into a bevel edge chisel

Here is a photo from the legendary SG that will have come off the forum originally.
Looks like bevelling is a bit of a stretch on the small sizes.
There was also a set from Derek sold at some stage ... I'm sure he said the smallest (two?) were not bevelled.

Thank Derek ...

"There are 10 chisels in all: 1/8", 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 1, 1 1/4" and 2".
Note that the 1/8" was reshaped from an original 1/8" insofar as the sides were bevelled. There are two original 1/8" Berg shapes. One looks closer to a mortice chisel with square sides. The other is a bevel edged shape. The latter is the useful shape (e.g. for dovetails) but is very rare and would set you back about $250 each. So I relieved the edges and now it is a bevel edge chisel.
The other point is that the 1/4" and 5/16" are very close in size. "

Thanks Paul.
I had seen the DC thread but not the SG thread so thanks for those.
I think that if i take a small amount of the sides and leaving the bottom alone like a trapezoid i might be heading in the right direction.

Bevelled 1/8th Bergs must be uncommon indeed. In fact the 1/8th size isn't all that common, & of the few I have come across, all were non-bevelled versions. The one I have from my father's set is absoutely parallel. I calipered it yesterday, to see if there was any slight relieving at all, but the calipers said 'no'. One of these days I'll get around to doing a DC modification on it......
Cheers,IW

Derek any chance you can share how the modification is done?

Turns out there were enough photos of Dereks chisels lurking out there that I could work the answer out.
On the last chisel you can see that the top two edges have been relieved.

There is an article on my website. You can do this without a jig, that is, just by eye. However a jig creates a more even, professional result.
