Stanley 50 highlights my lack of skill. Anyone know a tutorial?
In the process of downsizing to an apartment over the next few weeks. I'd like to keep doing some woodworking, but it will be hand tools only.
So I recently picked up a Stanley 50 on eBay. Great condition, had all the bits, just need to sharpen the blades.

Had a play with it this afternoon, and I'll need to spend a fair bit of time with it to get any kind of competence.
Does anyone know of a book/DVD/etc that could help teach me how to get the best out of this thing? All I could find online so far was [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxo6ROrs3wI"]this[/ame].
Thanks,
Tex

hi Tex, congrats on getting a nice crisp #50.
To get you started, here's a few resources that are great:
Try finding a copy of Planecraft, Hand Planing by Modern Methods, produced to describe the use of various Record planes but is great as a general reference. My copy is from 1934 and includes a discussion of the Record 050 which is very similar to the Stanley 50.
It looks like you found Alf's video. Check her pages here:
Combination Planes @ Cornish Workshop
which has links to the record 050 and stanley 50 manuals
and here:
How To Use a Combination Plane @ Cornish Workshop
a discussion of various combination planes, including the stanley 50.
Once you get it sharpened and tuned, remember that when you want to make a groove or bead or whatever, start with short strokes at the far end of the board, and work your way back with progressively longer strokes.
Have fun.

There are some great threads here, especially by Jake Darvall. Here for example is his thread on the experiments he conducted with the Stanley 55:

Everything Jake says for the 55 applies to the 50Cheers
