Default Only US$1500 for a plane.

Bridge City sent me a 2006 calander with pictures of their newest plane all over it.

    Have a look. http://www.bridgecitytools.com/pages...=0&tertiary=-1

It is variable from 37.5 degrees to 90 degrees.

    The VP60.

Thanks Mr BridgeCity, but US$1500 is too steep for my blood.

It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

I saw this the US forum about a week ago, but I didn't say what I really thought of it there.

    I will here though.

    What a heap of $#!7!!!!!

Waaaay too much garbage hanging off the thing, too complicated and I don't think it's terribly attractive either. Not the finish, but just the way the thing is put together detracts from it.

I say this, as I have a design for a variable angle plane, just need to do something more than a drawing or three.

    Sooo...

I now have a bit of heat, courtesy of a big kerosene burning thing, a barrel filled with insulation and refractory cement, a large box full of synthetic molding sand and somewhere to use it all without it catching on fire.

Don't know if I can melt iron yet, but ally, brass and bronze are more than fair game.

I was going to keep that plan quiet, but since they let the cat out of the bag, who is going to care very much anyways? Heck, if anything I get a fleet of Norris adjusted planes in nice, ductile iron for the cost of a few litres of fuel and a couple of hours of time. Can't complain too loudly about that.

Besides, could you trust Bridge city to make any tool and have it as good as the asking price suggests? Google thier anniversary squares debacle to see what I mean.

AWR did a review of block planes recently and it included a Bridge City...a nice looking plane but in terms of value for money the other planes reviewed won out.

Given a choice of a Bridge City or Veritas/LN Id go for the latter and spend difference on other tools.

Even if you can't melt iron, a bronze body plane (maybe even with an add on stainless shoe) could be very acceptable in the marketplace

    I know...

    Problem is finding raw materials.

I can find enough scrap to make heaps of aluminium bronze, which is tough and hard, but it's a nightmare to cast. Which is why LN stick with manganese bronze. Much nicer material to work with.

Cross that bridge when I get to it though. Still haven't melted more than a few ally hockey pucks as of yet.

When I saw the price, I expected it to have an electrical plug on it.

Does it come in any other colours, because I am worried about it clashing with my other designer tools. (big rolling eyes)

Does it have a DVD and cup-holders?
It would need to have at least a beercan holder to justify the price!

For some reason i feel these planes are purchased mostly by tool enthusiasts as "museum pieces" and probably displayed more than used (if ever).

But yep, US$1500 can buy me a big a$$ jointer

    G'day,

It'd buy me that 15" C/T thickneser I want. At that sort of price my only reaction is he can go whistle Dixie.
I make things, I just take a long time.
