    Default $2 Skew rebate plane

I picked up this old skew rebate plane at a garage sale for $2. It had an enormous mouth and had been charred - maybe deliberatly:confused: - and reshaped with rounded sides. I gave it a quick sharpen, but found it was fairly useless.

Some time later I decide to try and do something with it. I sliced off the toe parrallel to the sole and reglued it to close up the mouth, cut the ends square, and flattened and squared up the sides and sole. The sides were too rounded still so the cheek pieces were added (some kind of walnut) unfortunity one of them slipped a little during gluing. Having just picked up a little Record #040 plough at another garage sale it soon gained the inlays of (I think) redgum hiding that little stuff up! A new beech wedge, and I was ready to discover how tricky sharpening a skew iron for a fine cut can be with negligable latteral adjustment available. I eventully got it right and finished the plane with boiled linseed oil & turpintine and a coat of wax.

The end result is probably a little over the top but it is comfortable to use and slices accross the grain rather pleasingly!

That is a fine piece of work you've done there.

But don't you prefer the rustic charm of the original?

Cheers - and keep up the good work!

It sat on the shelf exuding a rustic aura for two years, but that old laminated Matherson blade held too good an edge to retire.

As it happens word seems to have got out that I will take in homeless, abused and negleted tools, so they keep following me home. There is more rustic charm out in the shed than I can poke a stick at
