    Default 3-in-1 rabbet plane?

    Hi all.

Does anyone out there know if there's any rabbet / shoulder plane (new or vintage) that can be used as full-length, or shortened to bullnose or even chisel plane? I know the Stanley 92-94 will do full-length or chisel, but is there any plane that will do all three?

    Cheers,
    GW
Where you see a tree, I see 3 cubic metres of timber, milled and dressed.

The one that springs to mind is the Clifton 3110 (MIK carry them here in Oz) which is, I believe, a copy of an earlier Preston (possibly with the same number, Derek will know)

however, personally I think you're better off with dedicated planes

The 311 convertible shoulder plane was made first by Preston and then by Record. The numbering changed to 3110 when Clifton started making their version. The old Record ones can be quite pricey.

The Veritas Bullnose Plane converts to a chisel plane but it doesn't really do the shoulder plane function. In bullnose mode the length of sole in front of the mouth is too short for accurate shoulder plane work.

The Clifton 3110 is an excellent choice and worth the money.

Being strapped for cash I got this
Buy Axminster Superior 3 in 1 Shoulder/Bull-Nose/Chisel Plane from Axminster, fast delivery for the UK
There is no brand name on it so I suspect it is from China. That said it works well and I reckon good value for money. I have used it full length and as a chisel plane but as yet have not found the need to use the bull nose end. It worked out of the box but was better after properly flattened the back if the blade and honed it. That only took a few minites on the oil stone.
    Regards
    John
PS. I just noticed the price and I dont think I paid that much for it over a wear ago. It was less than any of the old records I had bid on.
