Some advice on Rebate planes please
G'day,
new to the forum, and fairly new to nice woodworking -- always been handy, but in rougher areas like home extensions/renovations and building sheds etc -- my 11 yr old son's new interest in wordturning has motivated me to build a timber bench, and I'm becoming hooked on hand planes (God help me). Have bought and restored an old Australian No 3 Stanley (nice), a newer English No 5 Stanley (Ok, planes well) and an older Record No 6 (nice).
Latest purchase was a rebate plane, and I can't fugure out why one side of the blade(iron?) has a radiused corner (the right hand side as you use it). So far its been irritating as I prefer to have the fence on the left and find I'm 'working away' from the rebate as it deepens, following the stupid curved bit. With the fence on the right hand side the square corner leaves a very nice rebate but its hard to use inthat configuration.
Before I do something drastic like sharpen the curve away I thought I see if anyone out there can assist and explain why the curve is there.
(Love the site btw, got a real thrill out of using advice from here and links from here to tune the 3 planes above and they all plane far better for the work)

G'day Waratah (I'm surprised that hadn't been taken as a username already) and welcome. Especially welcome to the darkside of using and acquiring older hand tools.
I am prepared to be corrected by those more experienced and learned than me, but I reckon that if there was a reason for radiusing the RH corner, it was for a particular job. All my rebate blades have square corners (or indeed, in some cases a bit on the acute side, especially on the RH side) to allow the rebate to be perfectly square and sharp in the corner.
I can only think the radius was an attempt by a previous owner to make some sort of moulding using the rebate plane rather than a #45 or #55.Cheers
Jeremy

Gday Waratah.. The corner of that blade should certainly not be rounded. short of taking the plane back to carbatec (might not be a bad idea, the plane should be fit for its purpose) you'll want too grind the blade down intill you have a good square edge.

Thanks for tips everyone, I've ground the blade square, and trimmed the 'notchy cutter thing' out flush with the edge of the plane and it works heaps better.
