    Default Aldi chisels

I just bought a set of 4 Aldi, Workzone, chisels for about $13. They have chrome vanadium steel blades and ash handles. They are made in China. I don't suppose the backs will be al that flat but that can be easily fixed. The bevel has been sharpened to some degree on a belt sander. Again the sharpening is not an issue. Chisels could be sold blunt and it would not make much difference.

The sides of the chisels are narrowish at the tips and taper up to bridge girder size as you go up towards the handle. I am mulling over regrinding these to a narrower profile on the edge.ke

Now are they worth $13? Well I bought them for a young bloke who has few tools and less money so they are certain to be better than what he has. And they are better than the first set of chisels I had and used for many years. For $13 I don't know how anybody could complain.

I agree , I bought a few sets a few years ago and every time I need an odd chisel for a special job, I heat and bend and grind them to what I want . There has been a few odd looking tools made from those cheap chisels here.

You'll find that Paul Sellers (check his youtube channel) rather likes them.

I saw the video and he is a bit keen on them. But really $13 for 4 chisels! If they take a bit of surgery once you get home, who cares.

I got some too,the backs are not flat but they are concave which is not too bad.

Concave is easy to fix. So long as the bit behind the cutting edge is flat then I am satisfied. Convex would be a problem.

I bought my set a couple of years ago, brought them home and whacked them on the Tormek, brilliant bit of kit for the price.

You lot have convinced me & I bought a couple of sets of these for her indoors which I will clean up and use as a knock about set in the new shed. Thanks for the heads up.

I am unclear as to whether you are cleaning up "her indoors" or the chisels and which of the two is the knockabout set.

In fact I bought a cheap set of chisels (probably less than $20 but I don't recall) for SWMBO as she is the primary painter in our house restoration project. I recently re ground the bevels and sharpened them for her. This is how they now look about a month or so later:

You can see why I was unwilling to let her loose with my chisels. However, the Aldi chisels sound really good and are cheaper than sharpening these old tools. I will have to keep an eye open for when Aldi have them available. I was stuck for a Chrissy present for her. Looks like the problem is sorted .

Of course there might be a repercussion or two (or three) .

Can I suggest buying 'er indoors one (or two or five) of those 50 cent paint can opener thingies instead? They don't hack the lid like chisels can.

I bought two sets. One for me and one for the guy next door who uses plane irons as chisels. Now if I can convince him that it really is better to use a plane with a handle than one without...

Life's not that simple at our place. SWMBO uses chisels as chisels, but chisels things she aught not to chisel such as nails and the like. For paint tins she uses my best screwdriver!
