Thread: Aldi selling magnify light lamps with clamps

I was in Lincraft today and noticed that they have 3 models of magnifiers with LED lights.
A desk lamp magnifier with LEDs around the rim for 49.99
A desk lamp with seperate magnifier for $69.99
A floor standing model for $89.99.

I tried a magnifying lamp but found it very awkward for shed jobs, especially for saw sharpening. They are ok for working on a restricted & small area, but you have to reposition them constantly to follow a row of saw teeth. They also seem to be in your way all the time, no matter how you position them.

For my needs (saw sharpening, working at the metal lathe, etc.), the headband magnifiers are vastly more practical. For quite a few years I used a cheapie (<$20) from McJings, which was good enough for the purpose, but for about the same money as you are talking about, you could get an "Optivisor" headband type. They cost a bit more than the cheapies, but the lenses are better quality, which means you can use them for longer periods without your eyes wanting to fall out. The best feature though, is that there is a choice of lenses, which, if chosen correctly, can give you a comfortable working distance. The lenses can be chosen to add to your specs if you are a spectacle wearer, or you can get a more powerful lens and use it without specs. The trade-off is that the more powerful the lens, the shorter the working distance, so in general, it's best to go for the least powerful lens that gives you a clear image.
