The biggest thing is making sure you kill off the entire present generation so you don't breed resistance. This means hitting them with a correctly strong mix. The worst possible solution is what far too many people do... Mix too weak or don't stir, don't apply enough, and only the weakest weeds die, and then make another batch that's slightly stronger, lather, rinse, repeat. You've just used natural selection to create your own herbicide resistant strain.
Hit them hard, kill them off, and then the next generation only comes in via seeds carried by birds or the neighbor's mower or whatever isn't resistant.

I've always followed that. if you want to go light, go light on fertilizer, but don't spare the rod with herbicides and pesticides if you've got to use them. it's a public disservice beyond just our own yards to do that.
But my relatives were farmers. Unfortunately, my grandfather did like to follow "only as much fert as you can get on the fields without taking an operating loan" and while it's great to be debt free, it's not that great if it causes you to live land poor!
The biggest challenge here in killing weeds is using something like triclopyr and then waiting if it rains a day later or 36 hours later "did it get enough or didn't it?"
there's going to be resistance sooner or later, but doing as much as possible to push it into the future is better.
