Default Amazing demo of hand planing

I had a real eye opener when groeneaj came around one night this week to show me how to use a plane, at my request. Using scrap 4 x 2 radiata pine timber, and his big No.7 jack plane, in a few strokes the edge was glass smooth, far smoother than any sanding that I could achieve. He then brought out the little block plane and did the same for one of the ends. It was awesome !

Learnt the value of setting the blade alignment spot on using a little wooden hammer to tap the blade into position, rather than using the lateral blade adjustment lever. Interesting how he continuously used the adjuster nut between strokes to fine tune the finish, without slowing down.

I had heard of tissue thin shavings before, but never seen them until the other night.

    Many thanks for this, Andy
    regards,

    Dengy

I so value the wonderful caring and sharing that goes on in and around these forums. Watching a skilled operator take fluffy shavings... Seeing them float up into the air carried by the momentum of the plane. Hearing that distinctive sound...
    mmmm
i was hoping for a few pics....but alas...
so here is one of my own. Not in the league of many on this forum but it'll do me for now as the skills improve.
