Yeah, it's pretty rare. I think that Rob Lee bought one about two years back and paid this amount.
I have the "poor" relation , the Stanley #51/52, and the market value on that is about $1500.
Sheddy, I think that you slipping further and further down the slope!

Yeah Derek, I'm trying to hold on to something but boy, it is slippery!
Seriously though, I had no idea that these sort of tools could bring such prices, quite an education looking at some of the prices being asked.
Am enjoying reading the book on Wooden Planes though.

Out of my league as well unfortunately and, like Woodlee, even if I was in that league I'd be too scared to use it. I'd say most people buying a vintage plane like this wouldn't be buying it as a user.
The plane is an interesting design, which prompted me to go looking for the patent information. It turns out the patent information provided by the eBay seller was slightly off. The plane was patented by David C. Rogers not George E. Rogers, and the patent date was 19/09/1882 not 13/09/1882. But hey, I'm just being picky. You can view the patent information here.Regards,
Ian.
A larger version of my avatar picture can be found here. It is a scan of the front cover of the May 1960 issue of Woodworker magazine.

i've seen one of these before. There is a shop in Mittagong NSW which has thousands of tools. It is housed just off the main street in the antique mart along with about 40 other antique shops. He has a fine range of tolls and a fine range of prices too: expensive to outrageous.
He has $3000 on the same shooting board. Mind you it is a superb tool.
My home made one cost me nothing and does perfect ends at 90 degrees.
enjoy the forum.
