Atkin & sons
Hi all,
I have wanted to post this saw up for a few years,
but never got round to It. It is a Atkin & sons 14" Back
saw, It is brass back, The stamp on the Brass reads Cast
Steel, Atkin & sons, Sheffield Works, Warranted London Strand,
I am struggling to get info on this saw because of the London
Strand etch. There does not seem to be much info on Atkin & sons.

I think you’ll find it’s actually London Spring?
Nice saw

They came from Birmingham, but called their factory Sheffield Works, here are some links which you might be able to use to find more info

Atkin & sons
Hi
I now read it as London Spring.
My eye sight failed me. Any idea what
age it is?
Martin.

Simon Barley’s book “British Saws and Sawmakers from 1660” gives a date range for the Sheffield Works of 1856-1931. It also shows a set of back stamps that looks the same as your saw, but without the “Spring steel”, with a date guide of c1880:

"London spring" & "Silver steel" were both claimed as superior saw steels. I think it is mostly marketing hype - quite a range of steels work well for saw blades, the most important ingredient is careful hardening & tempering. Some steels are easier to manage in that respect, so perhaps some could be considered superior, but for the average user, it's probably Tweedledum & Tweedledee.....
Cheers,IW

Hi OW. I have found that backsaw.net has lots of good info though new contributions seem irregular at best. Occasionally the moderator appears in this forum (RayG)
