    Default Auger bits

    Hello to the brace fanatics!

Can someone advise where to source auger bits without paying above the odds?

I'd love to avoid Gumtree / ebay if i can as i can't check out of the condition.

Any suggestion would be most welcome.

    Regards.

    Adam

Adam, are you after any particular sizes? I've got a heap of extra bits that have been given to me, or that I've short-circuited on their way to landfill. I'm trying to clear out the extraneous 'stuph' from my shed, & would be happy to send you the lot for postage. I'll check later & see how many/what sizes are there, & you can decide if they would b useful. They'll need a touch of cleaning & sharpening, of course.

You are usually pretty safe with auger bits; apart from bends, about the only irreparable trauma they suffer is broken-off or stripped lead-screws. Both should be apparent in a half-decent photo, so just avoid any with fuzzy pictures....

    Cheers,
    IW

    Hi Ian.

The last ones i got from gumtree i didn't notice that the spurs on the sum of the bits had either filed off or snapped. My fault for not researching more about these tools first but you learn from your mistakes!

In terms off sizes, i'd be more than happy to take any surplus hardwood bits up to 3/4 in off your hands.

I'll check after work which softwood bits I'm missing (or are damaged) and reply to this thread.

I still have your bank details from the sliding bevel you made so please let me know how much to reimburse you for this.

    Many thanks.

hi Ian, went to my local Mens Shed on the Central coast , they had a labelled box of 50 or so brace bits, I selected 6 , most seemed to have had dodgy sharpening jobs,Irwins USA, one Sheffield,One Millers Falls that is bent,Stanley Australia in Metric, $1 each, and a Engels Brace in good condition for a donation, luckily a mate is a saw doctor and was able to resharpen the worst, you could try your Mens shed as they are a repository of unwanted tools , Ross

Adam, that's a very generous offer from Ian, go for it. BobL just dropped me a good handful of various bits from his late FIL's shed clearance for no charge which I thought was pretty good of him.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.

Hmm, this is a bit embarrassing, both because I should've checked before making the offer to Adam, & because of my vague memory! When I went looking for the spare bits, all I could find was this lot of amputees - they've all had their heads chopped off, presumably for use in a 3-jaw chuck! Auger bits.jpg

It's a pity, as they are all in quite good condition otherwise. I know I had a heap of spare bits a while ago, a friend from the local mens' shed keeps dropping off donated tools that nobody at the shed wants (they are all dedicated electron burners there!) & were destined to be dumped. However, it seems I've either already found a home for them, or put them somewhere 'safe' -so safe I can't find them!

I do have 3 spare braces, not one of which has a name on it, so I can't tell you who made them. The two on the outside look identical except one has a die-cast yoke/ratchet housing that has cracked in multipe places. The others are steel & would be eminently usable after a cleanup. Spare braces.jpg

Anyone want to re-home a brace or two instead?

    Cheers,
    IW

Ian, my fingers are trembling too much to actually type what I think of those butche...(ahem) modified bits, of course I realise you didn't do that to them, they were given to you in that condition. It is probably common knowledge, but if they were to be used in a powered drill the lead screw should be filed to be less aggressive.
The centre of your three braces looks like a Mit-A-Mit or Silex to me, the other two look nondescript Japanese.
    Cheers,
    Geoff.

I most certainly wasn't the surgeon. It's true that reducing the bite of the leadscrew makes them safer to use in powered drills, but it's much more exciting to leave em aggressive, especially when you decide to drill a 3/4" hole in a lump of hardwood on a fairly gutsy DP & don't bother tying it down securely! In my defense, it was early in my career, I'd not owned a real DP before, and the bit I used was supposed to be suitable for power drills (it had a factory-applied hex shank). Fortunately, I learnt the lesson without sustaining any injuries, & the rush of adrenaline sure helped sear it into my brain.

And Geoff, my lad, you are a bleedin' legend! I decided to give the shafts on those braces a wee rub-over with some 240, and immediately exposed "Japan" on the two you picked as such. Nothing else, just he single point-of-origin word. On the other, I quickly found this: Stamp 1.jpg

A bit more rubbing on the top arm exposed this: Stamp 2.jpg

I was scratching my head, and couldn't make it out, though I was sure I'd seen a stamp like this before. Of course when I read your post, the penny dropped with a thud.

Anyways, I've got one taker, so at least this one has found a new home where it will get a good dose of TLC & live to be a useful tool again....

    Cheers,
    IW

    Thanks ian,

Unfortunately the hex shaped bits won't fit in the old Stanley brace that I've brought back to life.

Hopefully someone who burns a few electrons will be able to give them a home!

    Regards.
