Default Made in Aus vs Made in England

I am looking at adding a hand plane or 2 to the tool box, there are a couple of older Stanley planes on Ebay at the moment and one is made in Australia and the other is made in England. Is there (was there) a difference in the quality of manufacture between the 2 ? I am of course prepared to spend some time sharpening and cleaning etc to get it ready to go. I am not at the level where I think I need to drop a few hundred $$ on a Veritas or similar plane yet and one of these older ones seem a decent option where I can learn to take it apart, sharpen the blade and put it back together again. Plus of course I want to do some actual woodwork with it !!

    Thanks for the help ...

    Hi Tim
If there is any difference in the older Stanleys from Oz or England I don't think it will matter for your use. The older models tune up well and are good users. check them over for cracks carefully as these can't be repaired very easily, but don't be put off by surface rust or short blades. Spend the most time on sharpening the blade and fitting the backing iron/chipbreaker and you'll get a good plane. Good Luck

I remember My dad having a set of stanley planes going back over 30 yrs ago in the UK ...they were solid and sharp and as I recall worked perfectly ... I was only a kid back then and never allowed to touch them ... but he turned out some fine work with them ... as mentioned if they are in good order without nicks or blade damage then grab them if the price is right.... they clean up beautifully.

I have a set of English and Australian Stanleys (early ones not the later ones).

    Overall they are similar..

    They weight about the same

They tune up well (some take more effort than others)

    They work the same...make shavings

Over the decades of Stanley manufacturing planes there are differences even in the earlier decade models.

The main differences in the earlier models is in the area of the frog. (as I said I don't have any of the later Stanleys)

So on the issue of Aus or Eng it's not a great variance in manufacture. Just go for it and it's in the real joy you have in fettling one.

Thanks for the info, I have put a couple of bids in for one UK made no5 and an Aus made no4. See how it goes. Am looking forward to hopefully getting some new old toys to play with.
