    Default Axes

    Hi all,
do you know I did a search on this site for axes and nothing came up.
So I thought I'd start one. Couple of questions as usual.
Does anyone know a good website dedicated axe head collecting?
Why are plumb axes so expensive. What are the best Aussie brands?
I bought an old plumb and a Hytest? today at the markets. Sharpened the Hytest. Wow! Is Kelly an old aussie brand?
I'm quite interested in axes but would like to collect aussie ones.
Anyone collect, or know much about them?
    Appreciate the thoughts as always.
    D

Welcome to the forums. Plumbs are an excellent axe, and don't forget the English makes Brades, Giffikin etc. Swedish axes too should be in your sites Al. Look for Gransfors Bruks, & HB.

Try this for a site on axes.

PLumb & Hytest are about the only Aussie made brands I am aware of and they have a range of marks. PLumb did have a few marketed as ''Tasmanian pattern" And think. PLumb I think had some history with Hytest but I dont recall the exact relationship now. There was also a US plumb brand.

Kelly is generally recognised as a well known US maker.

    Regards,
    Steve

    Default Awesome site.

    Thanks Zsteve,
thats an great site!. I can see that there is heaps to learn about axes.
So far the collections is 2 plumbs, a Hytest and an HB. Clearly the american axes have a greater scope and history, but I would still like to look into Australian axes.
    I'll keep you posted.
    Thanks for the replies guys.

Not a collection as such, but we have an old Brades of my fathers and a newish (20 years) swedish axe both good steel, hold an edge well and are used daily through winter. They only get sharpened at the start of winter and then only if they need it, they tend to hold up pretty well to splitting blocks and cutting kindling both pretty kind to an edge.

Best axe I ever owned was a brades, sadly my father in law used it to break up a concrete path

    Cheers,

Keech Castings is an Ozzie company that's been making axes since 1934.

That reminded me Shutterbug of another local company from Clarence Town near Dungog / Gloucester who make axes. They are called Sneddens Fencing and can be found on this site, http://www.ruralfencing.com/ .

You are are right they have been making axes since 1933. if you go to any Show that has Wood Chop you see most of the Axemen useing Keech /Keesteel Axe`s not like the Vintage one`s but they are still Keesteel

For more information on One of The BEST axes made in Australia go to www.nswaxemen.asn.au/articles ,The Spirit Of Competition , The Ideal AXE -KEESTEEL Tells its story.

The Company made 3000 Axe Per Week in the 30`40 ,now as a Restorer and Collector of Axes try and Find one that was made in the 30`s in Good Condition.
I sometime See them on Ebay.
    Good Luck Neil
