Bench vice jaws
Hi all
just noticed I've lost 1 jaw off my 4"(100mm) vice, it is 105mm in length and 20mm wide with 75mm hole centres
does anyone know where I could source a new/good 2nd hand pair
the vice doesnt have any manufacturers stamp on it but it looks to be made before china started making them
any info appreciated
cheers
Bryan

Trying to match something up maybe a stretch, probably best to make something yourself.
looking at the 1st photo is that a crack in the jaw slide, just above the leading edge of the base?

Not a crack just a line of grease posing as a crack

An old school engineering buddy old me how he changed all his vice jaws to mild steel as this produces less damage to object being held.
If they get damaged Mild steel is cheap and they can easily be replaced.
About about 9 years ago I was given an old rusty 6" Dawn offset vice I decided to do that and it has worked well. I just went to my metal scrap merchant and bought a short length of mild steel bar and and using the old jaws as a pattern was able to cut two short lengths off the bar easily make the jaws.
This is the vice I use on my welding bench so they are now starting to get beat up but I reckon they have another 10 years left in them yet.
I do have two other 4" engineering vices that I have all manner of soft jaws for (leather, Al, Brass and wood)

thanks Bob
those look pretty good, I was thinking of making similar out some hard wearing plastic/polymer to protect things a bit, I also have another vise I could use for the rough stuff
mine screw in from the face so I'd have to work on a recess/countersink setup

I don't like your chances of even getting a reply but I am quite jaded. You may have better luck appealing to our forum members in Perth who probably shop there. Perhaps they could take some measurements for you. Otherwise you may have to just roll the dice. It's a jaw for a standard 100mm vice. How much difference could there be from one brand to the next? Good luck.

"How much difference could there be from one brand to the next?"
Quite a lot actually, My other 4" vice looks VERY similar except the hole centres are 90mm and would not be interchangeable at all
However I found some aluminium magnetic jaws today at bunnings that fit snugly on the vise and appear to do the job well, so we'll see how it goes
thanks for the replies everyone
