Mid century style shelf for my planes
Hi all
Just sharing this shelf I made not too long ago for my Stanley #4 & #5 planes. Inspired by some bookshelf designs I saw on Youtube & Pinterest. I've got a lot of these unknown Aussie hardwood offcuts, so I figured I'd try something as my first 100% hand tools project. I also learnt half lap joints making this. Finished with Rustins Danish Oil.
Usual beginners caveat: lots of mistakes & imperfection, but I'm really happy with it! But I found out quickly that I needed shelf space for more than 2 planes

Azahan,
For a beginners project, that’s come up very well,
Unfortunately as you have mentioned I think you may out grow that quite quickly.
But the fun, is now working out Mk 2.
Cheers Matt.

What a lovely project Azahan.
We must be a perverse group of people to think that our planes, chisels and marking tools are worthy of display as things of beauty. It really does feel like a shame that mine sit hidden in a drawer.
You have created a lovely stylish unit that is both practical for access, and effective at displaying your planes. If it makes you smile that little bit wider when walking into your workshop, it's a job done well.

Thanks Matt & Lance!
I have always loved the look of classic planes, long before I got into woodworking and knew what they were used for. The combination of cast iron, wood & brass bits in that shape just looks so cool to me. That 1920s #4 was my first resto project and it was 100% covered in heavy rust when I got it in an op shop. I read up a lot and spent a ton of time restoring it and it works beautifully now.
After all that effort, I can't hide let it get hidden under the other crap in my garage I did have loftier dreams when planning the shelf, with side compartments & drawers for my sharpening kit but then I thought I should embrace the beauty of simplicity instead!

Planes
I also have planes on display in my lounge 43 . I blocked in a door way
and put shelves in it and a big pain of glass so no dust got in there to
keep the wife from nagging. It looks BRIL.

Nicely done, Azahan. I like the sleek design.
But as Simplicity said, those two planes may breed pretty quickly as you go down the hand tools rabbit hole.

Once you start collecting tools you cannot stop.
Its like being an addict, just one more Plane, Chisel
or what ever.

Nice design, and a good learning project.
I occasionally recall that, when I was setting up my shop years ago, I nailed a shelf in the open stud bay behind the workbench, and fit my entire stock of planes in two rows (the studs are rough 2x6 stock, thus six inches/15 centimeters wide) on the 22 inch/55 centimeter long shelf. That's maybe 7% of the current plane storage space.

Mid century shelf
When i started work at 15 I worked on different jobs
around the Island. My transport was by push bike.
I had to carry my tools on the bike. It was hard in the
bad weather with the tools. On one job a retired
carpenter asked if I wanted to purchase some of his
old tools. I did purchase some Marple Chisels, two
Bow saws, and a no 7 I Sorby Jointer plane in red.
I used that plane for years and it is still in good nick.
The were other tools as well and they came in an old
wooden chest which I sold to one of the other men
I worked with. I still have the red no 7 I Sorby Plane.
Martin.
