Thankyou desertoak. I did see them but they will have new handles.

I also saw these from the same seller

VINTAGE GRADUATED SET of 9 EA BERG BEVEL EDGE CHISELS SHARK LOGO on All VGC+++ | eBay

Not sure whether to branch out into yellow shark-o-lite. My be a bit too far
I do wonder though whether the wood handles are on as the yellow plastic broke. Oh well 3 days 16 hours to make my mind up.

I see the 1 1/4 has a healthy chip out of it. It might take a few hours on a stone to remove that one....

    Default Thanks to Pac man....

Well, thanks to the generosity of P.m., a deal was struck, the gap in my inherited set of Bergs has been filled, and they are ready to be passed on to a deserving new guardian, in due course.

As received, my chisels were a bit the worse for wear, due to neglect, plus, I suspect, the un-tender attentions of others during the old pot's last few years. One handle was damaged beyond use, and several were missing, and a couple had been replaced with some pretty crude facsimiles. I started out by making replacement handles from some Olive wood, which makes excellent handles, but they were a bit of a mismatch for the originals! (pic 1).

I decided they really needed to look like a set, and since I happened to be making some handles (about which Pac man may have something to add in due course... ), now was the hour. As it turns out, I had a chunk of She-oak off the old family farm. It was probably the last wood dad milled up, somewhere towards the end of his 80's, and he had given it to me a year or so before he died, realising, I suspect, that he wasn't going to get around to using it, himself. So what better than to give the set new handles made from this wood?

So here they are in all their glory (pic 2). The ring-ins on each side of the set of Bergs are a very narrow chisel (somewhere between 1/16 & 3/32") I made from an old chainsaw file, and a 1 1/4" tanged Marples, at the other end. I'm using dad's nice 'Black diamond' 1 1/4" in its place, as well as the 1 1/2" Marples that was in the sorriest state of all,but has cleaned up aafter a mammoth session of lapping.

    Thanks, P.m. - I'm a very happy little vegemite......

    Default berg lovers unite

Thanks for the photos of all the bergs.
Really love handles IanW and the home for them looks pretty speccy as well.
I have a reasonable number of bergs, tang socket and red handled, no yellow ones but I did see that set on ebay. Most of mine aren't too bad but some need restoring, time is always the impediment. Maybe I'll take a pic or two of them and put them up here if that's not hijacking a thread.
    Again
    thanks for the pics

So this deal of deals was struck between Ian W and I via PM.

On Monday lunch time i received my part of the bargain -Handles made from Californian birch from the handle master for the socket bergs missing handles above. What makes them more special it that they were contrived from Ian based on measurements PM'd back and forth. Ian will tell you he got the better deal but clearly it was me

When i get 5 minutes ( and a lathe) i will take the small whisker req'd off the larger ones.

    Thanks Ian.

Woops, I just assumed you have a lathe, Paul, because of the handle you sent with the large stub. They shouldn't need too much reducing to fit. Because of the taper, it may look like lots of wood needs to come off, but you'll probably find they don't need much. Take it slowly & check often 'til you get it to where you want it. Post another family pic when you get them done, so we can see what they look like dressed up for work.

Well, it's a good deal when both parties are happy, and I am certainly a happy chap now I have that gap filled in my set. I also added another very handy size, by grinding down a spare 1/4" to 3/16". I found this forlorn specimen minus handle & thick with grime & rust in FIL's shed when we were cleaning up a year or so back. It was in a pretty sorry state, but enforced weight-loss has removed the worst damage, & the remaining metal seems to be sound, so I think we have a winner.

BTW, the birch is from Canada, not California.....

    Cheers,
    IW

Hi Paul - that's ok, then. Didn't want to leave you with a half-done job, but I have found it's always better to fit the handles to their particular socket, particularly if some clown has bashed the bare sockets with a hammer, as has happened to several chisels I've acquired over the years. I also struck two Bergs of the same nominal size that had slightly different socket tapers. It was only a smidgin, but enough that one handle was too loose if put in the wrong socket. I hope the ones I did size will be ok - they were a good fit in my 5/8 to 1" sizes.

Ahh, time, the auld enemy. I thought I would be luxuriating in time since I left full-time employment, & be able to do everything I ever wanted, but some swine has gone & doubled the speed of all the clocks .....

    Cheers,

    Just an aside -
I have saved many pictures of Ian's chisel handles - they are amazing.
But I also like this look for the age and character:

    Paul
    (not mine)

PS: what do you think of English Oak for chisel handles?

    Cheers,
Who was that lucky bugger who got all those handles again... oh yes it was me.
Thanks to Wheelin for the lathe assistance some weeks ago now

Lookin' good, Paul. A couple are a mm or two more proud of the top of the socket than I aim for, but I'll let you off since it's your first go at fitting! Actually, it's far safer to have left a bit of extra wood than fit them too closely, because Birch isn't a super hard wood & they may take up quite a bit when you start hitting them regularly.

And to the other Paul: No-one answered your question about English Oak for handles. It would probably be quite ok, it's a strong wood, but I don't know how it stands up to bashing (have never tried it), but I'm sure it would be fine on carving chisels, at least. And yes, nice old well-used handles have an appeal when they look like those in your pic. Most old handles I've encountered have not been so well cared for, unfortunately.....

    Cheers,
    IW
