Bevel up Toothing Plane.
Hi all. Attached are photo's of a newly completed Toothing Plane.
The body of the plane is made from PNG. Rosewood. Length is 14" x 3" width x 3.5" in height.
The overall design is dominated by a substantially front tote. Its general size supplied a very good purchase point for the front hand when the hand plane is put to use.
Made from Merbau wood, the front tote has a height of 2.5", and has been firmly secured in place using a 2 part epoxy glued to a tight fitting 2.5"x 1" dia. round tenon.
With the blade bed at 55 * and the iron fitted bevel up, the actual approach angle of the cutting edge to the wood surface being worked is increased by an additional 25* to a total of just over 80*. That increase makes the plane much more user friendly given a deeper iron set.
This last photo shows the wood surface after its been worked with the Toothing Plane.
regards; Stewie.

Another lovely creation except I can't like the front tote.
Yes I understand the reason why and being a toothing plane requiring a bit more effort it's perfectly practical.
But in my opinion it just seems to heavy visibly.
But I also don't have an answer either if I was required to do so
And I would not say no to having it on my bench either

Nice work. Does this use the same blade as your last toothed plane or is the bevel toothed to keep the toothing on the upper surface like the LV toothed block planes?

My mistake. For some reason I had thought that their bevel up toothed blades were toothed differently.
So how does moving the toothed side from top to bottom impact the planing?
Is there a noticeable difference between the two types?

That about sums it up Brett. No value at all in having the toothing grooves on the main bevel.

Stewie, having the blade bevel up is going to increase the cutting angle, & it looks like you have used a fairly high bed angle to start with, so the front of the bevel must be getting close to perpendicular? That should give you both the benefit of a high-angle plane as well as the effect of toothing when laying into cranky grain - is that your cunning plan??
Does it make a noticeable difference to the effort required to use it?
Cheers,IW
