Bit identification
Does anyone know what this bit is for? It has the words "Preston England" and the Preston logo on one side, and the number 7/16 on the other. The diameter of the head is 7/16 inch.
Does anyone know what this is or what it is used for?

javali,
They are for rounding the ends of dowels, for hidden or exposed dowel work.
In the Preston catalogue,1909, they are listed on page 106, Doweling Tools, Dowel Rounder. The claim is that....
These are made of steel, Nickel Plated, and will work perfectly round ends to Dowel Pegs. They are supplied in the following sizes to cut dowels 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, and 9/16 inch.
No 1443.... 12/- per Doz.
There is a cone shaped one also in only two sizes 7/16 and 3/4 inch.
Regards,
Peter

Thanks Peter.
Do you know what dowel size fits these? 3/8th does not enter the hole, so I assume it is 5/16 or thinner...
