Blacksmith Made Froes - Orders and Enquiries
Hello fellow forumites,
Following on from my thread in the market place I have made a new thread to take further order and inquiries about the froes my friend Chris makes. The initial 5 have been sold and had good feedback on them so far.
They are made from high carbon leaf springs and have been hardened and annealed twice. They are all sharpened in the middle and are much heavier duty than your standard froe. Future froes will look a little different than the pictures below as the handle loop was part of the leaf spring but future ones will be made with a jig. Same functionality and looks very similar but thought i'd best point that out.
As for handles I am not sure how to proceed. I supplied 350mm lengths of 40mm oak dowel in the past but I am out of that and I'm not sure that you all wouldnt prefer to make your own out of a nicer wood. The oak dowel is plenty strong as all the brunt is felt through the metal only but please let me know what you think. Also, anyone who has already bought one any feedback on here would be appreciated. Chris really appreciated the messages from those who emailed me back in private messages. At this stage the price will be for the base froe only, not including a handle.
Price per unit is $110 including delivery within Oz. Happy to post outside of Oz at buyers expense.

I have orders already and its a first come first served deal. Just to confirm those who are already on the list in order are - CharlieZ, poundy, DerekCohen, waveink, Peter White, John Saxton and hppcheah. I will contact you with payment and mail details when your orders are ready.
To place your order please post a reply here so I have a record or who and when etc. and I will work out how correspondence works with an admin and edit this post accordingly.
Cheers,
Paul

Are the eyes cylindrical or tapered? Is it a paling or shingle knife size?

Hi Paul,
The froe arrived this morning. Thank you. Might be a week or two before I fit the handle as I'm in the middle of something else.
Also, the Cosman jig - is that tooling for drilling a hole dead centre in a piece of dowel?
Thanks,
Paul

If there was any doubt the froe Paul is selling is an excellent quality tool. Very thick blade and well finished.
I turned the handle and also a suitable maul. Once the BLO is dry they will be getting a first run

Many thanks!

Yes, the Cosman jig is the dowel centre drill guide. I’m working on refining the prototype and figuring out a nice case for it on the cnc. Once I have a product to show that I can reproduce efficiency I will make a separate post. It won’t be long. I was waiting on some reamers to arrive and they have. Just have to get into gear and make a few. Pricing will be cheaper than importing which was the main reason for making them. Haven’t figured out just what price yet. Might do 3 packages. 1/4", 1/4" + 3/8" and a deluxe 1/4",3/8" plus dowel plate kit. I’ll do one of each and gauge response.
Cheers, Paul

Quick update.
We're on track to complete about 3 a week. 3 should be ready next week. Im on phillip island and the busy work season just started with the covid restrictions being lifted so Chris is mega busy. I'm trying to help out a bit more to keep things on track. I'll be in touch with the first 3 in line asap.
Cheers,
Paul

Sorry for the delay Ratbag. I missed your post.
The eyes are cylindrical. Theres nothing stopping Chris from making them tapered but I'm not sure that there would be much difference between a wedged handle and a tapered one. I'm happy to know any different though.
The blade side is 250mm long not including the eye etc, just the sharpy ouchy part. Google says that's a paling froe I think. We can make longer if needed.
