    Default Another possible lead

    Hi guys,

As a boilermaker my father has vast experience in making his own tools, jigs etc for his work. I've had a short chat with him about the feasibility of making hold-downs and he's interested in making a few to see how much work is involved and whether it's cost effective. Having worked with him for quite a few years in the past I have a good understanding of the processes involved so I don't expect it's too difficult a task. I think the clincher is going to be the cost of time and supplies.

I'll email him Woodwould's sketch and a few photos tonight and see what he thinks. More than likely he'll want to create a few tests and see how they perform.

    Regards,

    Denim.

I'd better start drilling more holes in my bench!

I thought you let the termites do that. Saves a lot of energy

I don't know what size of termites you have in your neck of the woods...

I'd be interested in another pair.

I bought a pair of Grammercy holdfasts and they are great. But one needs more than two.

    Thumbs up hold downs

Hi all I spoke to the spring works and I will give them some time to work out a cost etc
Will let you all know when he gets back to me.

I am assuming that it be made from mild steel and not spring steel? Let me know if it's any different.

If I am able to get a good price then I can post on the this forum asking for interest and I will set up an e-mail addy for the responses.

Over in old Blighty they recently went through the same exercise. In the end a member with a forge made them. Rather than start from scratch and re-invent the wheel, it would be worth our reading through their posts to learn from their experiences.

I haven't got time to read through it again ATM (19 pages ), but the above link is a good place to start. I think he (Richard) used 18mm round MS bar (but that needs to be checked). Everyone seems to be happy with the end product.

    Cheers, Vann.

ps I nearly bought some myself, but they're heavy and the shipping killed it for me.

Mild steel is fine to use. There is a mention that blacksmiths put the straight length into the heat to scale the steel thus creating a rougher surface for gripping.

Thanks, keep us updated. Just wondering...when u have a price, would it be worth starting a new thread titled "blacksmith holdfasts group buy" or something. Might get more people to view it perhaps.

Hi All, I got the first hold fast from the company and I have posted a pic of the hold fast. Company thinks the hold fast will be able to be made as we need them. I will send a few hold fasts to a few people for review. The company is in the process of making a few more for review.

Will keep all involved with the progress.
