sorry woodies, Haven't been on for a while (changing relationships, moving etc). Friday just gone 11/5/2012 I picked up the hold fasts to be posted for review. I will endeavour to post them on Wednesday next week to the people FF mentioned in this post above.

Still in the process of changing location, so life is very very very busy. Will keep you all in the loop when the reviewing has finished.

You may have already looked at this, but if not...

    How to Make a Holdfast

You could use a torch instead.

These are pretty much the same as the ones I made years ago and just what I was advocating could be made locally on a DIY level.

I question the height of the first bend on these holdfasts though; they would intrude too far into the work space. They only need to be tall enough to whack with a mallet for releasing them.

I do like the tight bend which would actually facilitate a lower profile while still providing a substantial vertical area for whacking when releasing the clamp.

    Hey Woodwould,
I agree with you 100%, I thought maybe showing instead of just telling might create some interest. I always prefer to do things myself, and this is sort of a do it yourself forum, but I guess buying them is easier. If I lived in Australia I might even offer to do them, but I don't.

    Hi all
My wife is in NY USA for a 40th celebration with some girlfriends for a week. Guess what I had delivered to her room - a pair of Gramercy Holdfasts. Woohoo!!!!
She has unpacked them and shown her girlfriends ("What are they"," my god they are so heavy" "I know, he is such a dag") is horrified by the weight, but I knew she had taken three bags with her for shopping..........
Just put them in somewhere and bring them home for me!

Now planning how to drill all my dog holes in the bowling alley benchtop that is nailed together...

Interestingly, I sent an email to 2 local blacksmiths with the holdfast PDF attached...no replies. So much for local businesses needing work huh? It's far easier to buy things on the Internet!

This falls a good distance outside of what I would consider a DIY project ... maybe if DIY stood for 'done in years' ...

Actually not much harder than making a shepherds hook, just heavier bar.

Sorry for the delay. With the poor weather, I didn't get out to the shed until this afternoon. Unfortunately I can't try the holdfast as it won't fit in the 3/4" holes in my bench!

The holdfast is very rusty and I took measurements off it ranging from Ø19.4mm to Ø19.8mm. I don't believe the rust is responsible for it being too large, I think it was actually Ø20mm to begin with.

I'll ask Herself to drop it in the mail to you early in the week.
