Building from wood from that you have cut from the log is the best . How did you come by the wood?

Hi Rob, The blackwood was laying in a Mate's fire pile just screaming to be salvaged it was at least 900mm dia possibly the biggest i've seen and 4mts long. And the Vic ash had come down nearby in a storm.

Just kidding, lol . Did you save the whole thing from becoming fire wood?

Sure did, its stacked in my carport. This tree is the blame for my addiction to milling, especially milling blackwoods

That's a nice chunk of wood.

I was reading that the good mallets get their weigh buy being soaked in boiling linseed oil for a few days. I wonder if that is required when we have such dense hardwoods here.

I also agree. You can't help but feel and perform better when you are using tools and timbers that look spectacular. If you have to use a tool, it should make you feel good to use it.

i often consider getting one (making one) out of something nice looking like that but then i'm always concerned it would damage my chisel handles or what i'm working on, various (handle) woods i have, nothing particularly exotic, some of the hardest might be the boxwood but i just use traditional beech mallets on them, though for some of the other (firmer) chisels i just use the side of my hammer, bad habit i picked up and been doing it that way so long i'm not likely to change now

curious, what type of handles do your chisels have Joel?

Hi Chippy! mostly bergs, both timber and plastic handles, i've a set of Titans that need new handles(any suggestions?) and a set yellow handled Stanley Hack chisels, I do have a box full of all sorts of old chisels awaiting restoration. I am very impartial to the Bergs been using them since I was an apprentice, looking back on the last 20 years and the way I treated the bergs on site I really should hang my head in shame,
