    Default Longer bow saws

I recently picked up a small (300mm - it is French in origin) bow saw and inspired by it and Tage Frid I am thinking that I will make a longer one for ripping and crosscutting larger pieces.

For a blade I will use one of the ECE blades from My Tool Store. that suggests that the width will also need to be about 600mm.

I have bought the brass bladeholder fittings from Micheal Connor and I have plenty of wood around to make it.

The plans I have seen tend to be for 12" blades. (eg Bugbear).

Has anyone got any experience of the dimensions of a larger bow saw? For instance, do you think that I need to beef up the frame to more than 19mm spotty?

    TIA
    Cheers

    Hi Jeremy,
Here's some I've made, and yes the largest has a frame of spotty. Works fine, although a tad cumbersome to reach around and hold the far handle when resawing 240mm chunk of red cedar! Both smaller ones are of silver ash.

    Cheers,

Thanks for that Andy. Looks like I can make mine out of some of Studley's floorboards, then...beauty.

Jeremy, I have a Bow Saw with a blade some 500mm length. 3/4" maybe a tad small, IIRC my saw is of 1" timber. I'll get the calipers out tonight and check.

Jeremy, the handles of my saw are 22mm thick and the cross piece is 18mm. apologies for no pics and the delay as I have been cleaning the shed in preparation of a card night.
I have been cleaning for two weeks and there is still a bench and the saw area to do

Thanks Pat. Can you tell me what timber your saw is made from? I reckon 19mm spotty might be pretty close to as good as 22mm of something else....

    Here's mine.

It's made out of 25 mm thick redgum. 19 mm spotty would be OK, just make it a bit wider

    I.e. so there is the same volume? So if your 25mm piece has a 30mm cross-section, my 19 mm piece should be 30mm x 25/19 = 39.47mm.

Actually I wouldn't be so fussy on this, but that sort of idea...
