Thread: A box for my Record 050 wip

A little more work before the wife called me inside.

1. The splines trimmed up
2. A test fit of the plane and parts.

I have started making the internal supports to hold everything in place. Hopefully finish it up tomorrow.

Looking great! Need to do the same for a few of my joinery planes but trying to decide between boxes or inserts for a larger carcass. Feels like I'm leaning towards a proper tool chest at this point, too many tools stacked up on shelves.

I’ve got an old wardrobe I use as my tool chest, with places for the planes but a couple like this one need boxes to hold all the parts. In my mind anyway. I’ll put up a pic of the wardrobe.

Yowie, it'll be interesting to see how the mitred corners hold up over time. Maybe it would be over-engineering, but I would have used finger joints or dovetails for a heavy-ish box that's going to get a bit of knocking about over the coming years. But maybe you're a more careful person than I am!

Top marks for making your box right away, there are far too many ploughs & combination planes in the world missing their vital bits. But the shape of these things means you end up with a lot of 'wasted' space in a box, and space is at an absolute premium in my tool cupboard. I manged to fit my router plane with its extra blades & Allen key for disassembling the 1/2" blade into a minimal case & find a spot to squeeze it into, but my 78 defeated me, I just don't have room anywhere for a box big enough to hold it & its few extra bits. I had to put the fence & depth-stop (which I rarely use) in a separate little compartment. If I'm not around when my tools get passed-on to new owners (which is highly likely, of course ), there's a fair chance another 78 will be cast naked into the world.

The extra parts already had a very narrow escape from the tip. The plane was amongst FIL's shed stuph (it had actually belonged to his father). I saw the bare plane in a box of all-sorts (in remarkably good order), and assumed the rest had long since gone their separate ways. Then I tipped out a tin of bits & bobs to see if there was anything useful in it, & recognised the fence rod amongst the nuts & bolts and other junk. That sent me on a quest & I eventually found all of the parts. If SIL, who is a fierce cleaner-upper, had had her way, all of the boxes the bits were in would've been dumped in the skip without so much as a glance at their contents!

With luck, someone who knows that there should be some extra bits for the 78 will sniff them out & the old thing may live into another generation with all of its parts. So try to keep all your bits together, fellas.....

Yes, maybe they aren’t he right joint. I did think about finger joints but didn’t like he aesthetics. We’ll see I guess.
I have an old 45 I acquired that is missing the two rods, so I know what you mean. I might get some machined up. I’ll make up a box for that at some stage - it is currently residing in the old 050 box.

That's nifty, two routers & their blades & guides all squeezed into the one box.

I made myself a wooden-bodied router after the Derek Cohen style, which fitted very compactly in a quickly-made "bandsawn box": Box OWT.jpg

But then I remade the router body & fitted it with an adjuster, which meant it would not fit in the box unless I removed the adjuster post each time. 1 a.jpg

So I made a new box, which is far less compact, but fits into the last remaining space on my plane-storage shelves: 1 b.jpg 1 c.jpg

As you can see, there's a lot of wasted space in the new box, but I haven't figured out how to make it more compact - perhaps I should fill in the extra space with a baby model, like the box you posted. The simple solution to my storage problems would be to cull my plane collection, but that's just too hard!
