    Default Box Making Tool.

    Hey Guys,

A general question here; What tools does one require to make a box entirely by hand?

    • Boxes will mainly be mitered.
    • Some boxes will be dovetailed requiring stopped grooves.
    • Lids will be of raised panel construction.
    • Boxes will be glued up with lid and base in place, lids will need to be cut off box.

Just after some of the tools the darksiders out there would use to construct the boxes.

    Thanks,
    Harlan

Decent hand saw, shooting boards (straight and Donkeys ears) plane, chisel, scraper, masking tape and screwdriver.

    Hey Lignum,

    Anything more specific?

    I was thinking more on the lines of;

    Cutting components

    • Miter box (compound)
    • Guillotine

    Groove cutting

    • Groove Plane (Groves in side of box)
    • Rebate plane (Fitting lid panels to groves)

    Cutting lids off and cleanup

    • Japanese Saw
    • Block Plane
    • Chisel(s)

    Hinge Install

    • Marking gauge & Knife
    • Chisels
    • Screwdrivers
    • Hand held drill
    • Tape

    Anything I'm missing?

Also, obviously you have to design boxes (being made by hand) differently now because machines are not being used. Are there any limitations in design I should know about?

    Thanks,
    Harlan

Stopped grooves are a pain in the rear with hand tools. You are better off designing around them. You could use drawer slips for exampe.
