Boxed Stanley #4
I have come across a stanley #4 in its box with a leaflet and appears to have not been used much. varnish peeling off the handles.
It has got $110.00 on it. Would this be a good buy?
There is another one not in a box and used but still appears to be all there and in good nick for $48.00.
Another bigger stanley with no number, wider and longer, appears good, for $48.00 too.
I dont know much about planes but might be time to take the plunge.
They have Bailey on the base and made in England, is that right?____________________________

$110.00 for a Stanley #4 is way too much. Even if it's in very good condition, it will likely need some tuning and fettling.
$48.00 is probably more like it - provided all the parts are there. It will probably not need any more work done to it than the more expensive one.
"Bailey" and "Made in England" are both legit. Stanley planes are mostly of the Bailey pattern (Stanley also made Bedrock and Gage planes). They were made in the US, England, Australia and Canada and maybe a couple of other places too.
In general, the older models are better than the newer ones.
Any pictures available?
All the best

Thanks Col,
I might go back and have another look at the older looking one then.
Tonto, they are in a little "junk shop" on Church rd Armadale WA.
Its an old house, they are on a shelf just inside the door to the left.
There are a few other hand tools in there but I was under pressure to leave from SWMBO and only noticed these on the way out.____________________________

Thanks for the offer kiwioutdoors.
I havent been specifically looking for a plane, jsut seeing them there kindled my interest so I thought if they were a good buy it would be like an omen or something.
My girls will be fishing round for chrissy present ideas soon so I might take you up on your offer if they do.____________________________
