Default Thread size for the removable fence of an Anchor #78?

I have an anchor #78 (almost an exact copy of the Stanley #78) rabbet and fillester plane which came with the removable fence and threaded rod. I assume the fence and rod is from a Stanley #78 as the thread doesn't fit the appropriate hole in the Anchor plane which appears to be fractionally smaller. I also don't have any bolts or screws that match the thread size in the hole on the plane body. Does anyone on the forum have an anchor plane of this type with the threaded rod for the fence who can inform me of the size and threading (TPI) on the fence arm? I don't know the vintage of the plane but assume it would be an imperial thread rather than metric. I was hoping to borrow a die of the appropriate size to cut a new thread to suit.

    Any info appreciated.

Dammit, if you wanted tread sizes for Stanley, Record, Woden, WS or Carter No.78s I might have been able to help . But I haven't got an Anchor .

If I remember correctly they're a European brand. Have you tried metric threads? The Stanley is a 1/4" thread (28tpi), so maybe the Anchor is M6.

    Good luck.

    Cheers, Vann.

I think I just tried everything I had that looked about the right size. I could take it to a hardware outlet and try a whole lot of different sizes more systematically. Anchor is a Swedish brand. I tried googling them for info but their aint much. They were promptly bought out by one of the bigger Swedish brands.

Default Anchor 78 Rebate Plane Fence Rod Thread Size

    Hi,

Anchor 78 Rebate Plane Fence Rod Thread Size

My Anchor 78 plane has measured threads -

. fence rod screw thread M6 x 1.0 (Metric ISO Coarse)
. lever cap thumb screw thread M6 x 1.0 (Metric ISO Coarse)
. lever cap screw thread M5 x 0.8 (Metric ISO Coarse)

Stanley 78 fence rod screw thread - 1/4 x 28 tpi (UNF) English and Canadian makes
    Record 078 fence rod screw thread - 1/4 x 26 tpi (BSF)

My Anchor plane looks well made, although missing a few bits.

Thanks Mike, that is great. Trust those Northern Europeans to hitch themselves to the metric wagon early. Now I have to find an M6 die and a piece of rod the right length.

I agree the plane is a good make. Unfortunately I am also missing the depth guide but I will have to see if I can make one up out of timber or brass now I know the threads are metric as it will be easy to get a bolt or screw to fit.

Default Anchor 78 Rebate Plane Fence Rod Thread Size

    Hi again

    Anchor 78 Rebate Plane.

A depth guide from a Stanley 78 will fit, with possibly just a little filing of the guide required to clear the rear of the guide slot against the guide screw.
A guide from a Record 078 or 778 will not fit.
You should be able to easily source a Stanley depth guide, even new, as the Stanley is still a current plane in some countries.

The screw for the depth guide is metric M5 x 0.8, (different to the Stanley).

The nicker/spur is the same size as a Stanley or Record, and these are still available.
The spur screw is M4 x 0.7 CSK, and these are readily available, even in Bunnings, albeit zinc plated.

I am missing the fence and fence rod on my Anchor.
The Stanley and Record equivalent rods are both a nominal 2.5 inch unthreaded length, and a nominal 3.0 inch overall length.
    BUT, they are different diameters.
So if you are using a Stanley or Record fence, you will have to choose the correct rod size before cutting the thread.
The placement of the threaded hole for the rod, on both sides of the plane body, is practically identical for all three 78 planes, Anchor, Stanley and Record.

Stanley fence rod measures 0.2795 inch 7.10 mm dia (delightfully non-standard, again)
Record fence rod measures 0.311 inch 7.90 mm dia.
Each rod is shouldered at the end of cut thread, to abut the plane body, and drilled to take a tommy bar at the outer end.

Cutter blades are interchangeable for all three 78 planes, Anchor, Stanley and Record, (but not the 778 blade).

Incidentally, my favourite rebate plane is a Record 778. Better adjustment methodology, and a far better fence with two rods.
Still easily obtainable, although now not in production.

These old rebate planes are very useful, and worth having around the bench, even without a fence or depth guide.

Must be getting old, as I almost always nick my fingers handling a 78/778, as the blade protrudes ever so slightly on one side from the plane body, when the other blade side is set correctly.

    cheerio, mike

I have an Anchor #6 bench plane. Never seen another one. When I finish my shed I'll see if it works OK. Looks a pretty solid copy of a Stan.
    Measure thrice, cut twice.

Did you get what you ordered? I've bought from them several times and usually had good service, but my last order was completely stuffed up, with some parts missing and others supplied twice.
