Default Do brand new Veritas Combination Plane Blades work with a vintage Stanley 55 Plane?

I have just purchased at the local tool markets a Stanley 55 Plane. The old blades in this collection are dilapidated, missing, or broken and I was considering the possibility that they could be replaced with new Veritas Combination Plane blades instead. I'm aware that older plane blades can work in the new Veritas Combination plane, but what about the other way around? Does anyone know if I can use newer Veritas Combination Plane Blades in the vintage Stanley 55 plane instead?

"The Veritas Combination Plane is supplied with a 1/4” wide, A2 tool steel grooving blade, and a selection of blade profiles is available separately. It will accept the right-hand (and unhanded) blades available with the Veritas Small Plow Plane, as well as the blades used with the Stanley #45 and most of those used with the Stanley #55."
Above is excerpt from 05P5901-brochure.pdf (veritastools.com)

Looks as if anything from Veritas (ploughs, beads, reeds etc) will work in the 55. The 55 has other complex profile blades which need the height adjustable skate on the 55, if you really need these they can be made with a bit of 3mm or 1/8" thick O1 tool steel.

    Regards

    Hello Jim

Yeah, the old Stanley 55 blades are mostly compatible with the new Veritas Combination Plane, but my question was the other way around. I don't want to buy the new Veritas Combination Plane at all. I want to buy just the new blades and only the new blades, for use in the old Stanley 55. I would hazard to guess that compatibility works both ways (i.e. the new plane works with the vintage blades, as well as vintage plane working with brand new blades), but that brochure makes no mention of using new blades with the old plane unfortunately. The investment in the entire collection of the new Veritas Combination Plane Blades is over $AUD1000.00. I was just wondering if anyone has attempted using the new Veritas blades with the vintage 55 plane.

Whereas I would LOVE a VCP.

I've a pristine Record 045 and the blades I *happen* to have fit perfectly.

This is an illuminating article: https://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolRe...ane-dados.html
