    Default This plane.....

And what I should to say seeing another beatiful example of Derek workmanship?

So I'll try. Here in Ukraine, in Russia say about such brilliant workmanship that "He can put horseshoes on the flea's feets".

    Brilliant work.

But I have to admit that I don't use mine very often. The most common need I have for grooves is in drawer sides & fronts, and I tend to cut these with the TS. I know it's giving in to electrons, but it's so easy & convenient....

    Cheers,
You know Ian, I feel much more comfortable using a hand tool than a power tool these days. I feel more confident that i can place the cut where I want it to go - point-and-shoot with a handsaw or chisel or plane. My tablesaw needs some work - the depth of cut is unpredictable (the saw blade will drop slightly when it is running). Consequently I did not consider it and used a tenon saw to remove waste from the body of the plane and the fence. As for power routers ... I would much rather trust in a plough plane.

    Regards from Perth

Plus the hand tools are gentler on the lungs, and ears, and tend not to rip off the bodies extremities, or project pieces of finely worked wood through the workshop wall.

Derek, I had a pretty hopeless TS for close to 30 years, so I think I know what you mean! A saw like yours is best avoided. I bought a much more decent saw a couple of years ago, and what a difference a bit of precision & repeatability makes! Only wish I could have afforded something like it a decade or two back!

So although I love my hand tools (particularly now that time isn't anything like the concern it once was ), there are still a few jobs like drawer bottom grooves that are just too easy & quick on the TS. I do use a plough if repairing an old piece, & want to match the old work, but haven't done much repairing lately - too many 'new' orders! Actually, another reason I don't use it a lot is because my set of cutters is missing the smaller size blades. I made a 1/4" to fit it, which works, but is isn't totally successsful. I've been looking out for a couple of small cutters, but haven't stumbled on any other than in full sets...

Although I own a couple of routers, I can't say I have ever enjoyed using them, but there are a few jobs (like cutting threads in our harder woods) that a high speed cutter actually does better than hand tools. But you will not get much argument from me - they are noisy, messy machines with a propensity for stuffing up an expensive or irreplaceable piece of wood in nanoseconds, no question.

    Cheers,

    Derek,
First class as always. On any shelf of planes that one would stand out.

    Hi John

Many thanks for your kind words. Indeed, your post has reminded me how tardy I was in not thanking everyone who posted here a few months ago. Not to forget snikolaev28, who came all the way from the Ukraine.

Paul, that "17 year old" won the Toolmaking competition at Wood Central back in 2007. His talent is breathtaking. My version is not a patch on his work (although I am very pleased the way it came out - did you see it at the recent Perth Wood Show? The pictures do not do the wood justice).

Ian, this post actually catches me building a box for the plane - which I blame you for!

    Regards from Perth

Orright, I'll wear it, as long as we all get to see what you come up with.....
