Fletty, total bummer!, but see pic., my dad's solution to a similar, but maybe not as serious incident.....
He was an artist with an axe, but more like a mud-dauber wasp with a welder. I've ground the front off to tidy it up, but lacking a die-grinder, the back has to remain as a reminder of the old chap. I think it adds to the pleasure of the inheritance, actually - his personal signature!

My sympathies.
Don't bother trying to repair the cap - it will not be strong enough.
Get a replacement from Hans Brunner (the link is somewhere in one of the early posts). That is my first thought.
If one is not available now, another will come up. They are common parts. Or check eBay (USA, not Oz). Or, make one out of steel and wood - now that could be fun to do anyway!
