Default Broken Stanley No. 1 Worth Anything

Today I walked into a second hand shop.

While rummaging through the junk I came across a Stanley No. 1

The one side of the casting is broken off and the rosewood tote is badly broken and the lever cap is damaged it looks like it was badly dropped.

The person selling it has no clue what it is and was asking $15 for it.

Is it worth buying? For parts or repair?

Probably not repairable, but the iron, cap iron and front knob (if undamaged) would each fetch three or four times the asking price for the whole plane.

I'd pay $15 for it and ebay the salvageable parts, I reckon repairing is probably more effort than it's worth

Yes its worth buying for that price !!!!! Rush back and get it ASAP.

In good nick their $1000 or more I think . Parts have got to be worth a lot more than $15.

Even if its to much effort to sell parts Id be having a broken no 1 on the shelf for comparison at $15 any day .

You could put it up for sale on forum or ebay and see what happens .

    Default Broken Record.

I bought a Record No.02 in similar condition some 5 or so years ago. It was in with a handful of woodies. When I picked them up the seller said he'd forgotten to throw the broken metal plane in the bin .

I quite agree. But I thought it was worth the ~$25 to satisfy my curiosity.

I had a pre-lateral adjuster #4 with half a side hump missing like your #2, Vann. It worked fine for me as a scrub plane for many years and is still doing duty in that line for a friend.

Sad to hear of these things being chucked out, at least keep them for parts! There always seems to be a need for bits & pieces...

    Cheers,

Hi Ian. If I recall correctly, it's you that has a beautiful Record No.02ss

I might get around to turning it into a working tool one day - maybe with modified No.3 irons and a L-N No.2 lever-cap.

But I'm not afraid to use a damaged/repaired plane. These are my 'go to' bench planes. Note that both the Records have damage, yet the Record No.04ss is probably my favourite plane (it's a WW2 era "warfinish" plane).

I have much better (unfettled) Record planes in storage - to do up when I have time. But there's no need, as these do what I want.

    Cheers, Vann.

Nope, not me Vann, must be one of them t'other Ians. The only Records in my kit are a 1960's-ish #4, and an 010 1/2 that I wish I'd not wasted my money on. I thought I'd scored a small smoother with an extra bag of tricks up its sleeve, but I soon discovered it's one of those planes that does everything poorly & nothing well, so it sits unloved in a drawer. I should give it away, but I don't know anyone I dislike enough to inflict it on....

I’ve been looking for one for a while and am willing to call you as many names as is necessary to build up the required value of dislike .

Seriously though, these still go for a fair amount of coin on Fleabay so if I can’t insult you enough to earn it outright then why not dispose of it that way? Or put it on the Marketplace for a desultory price coupled with the most stinging obscenity allowable under the Forum rules?

As a project it is easy to superglue thin ply to the undamaged side and base plus top of where the frog bolts on for machining. The broken side can be fixed with ply and glue also. Contraction would be neglible.
There are still foundrys operating in your area so a one off in Brass or gunmetal is possible.
You don’t have to replicate the obscure Stanley threads and the matching is not a big deal.
The main input is your time, I cast up a few Bedrock bases from similarly damaged finds well before they started reproducing them in Canada and US and now China.
I never did finish them but the foundry course required a stream of patterns for you to mould and pour.
They weren’t too keen on the old taps I planned to melt as one can never be sure all the H2O in out of them.

Okay got around to going back to the second hand store and picked up the No. 1.

The body has no stamps, dates, or patents on it. I can only tell that it is a Stanley by

Stanley rule & level Co. New Britain Conn U.S.A. stamped on the blade which looks almost unused.

    Here are some photos;

I am not a tool collector nor would I have any use for this thing. So I will strip it give it a gentle clean with kero nothing more then I will sell it for parts.

    Something's not right, TS...

For starters, the #1 never had a lateral adjuster lever. Second, the brass adjuster wheel is concave at the back where it should be solid. (see Patrick Leach's description).

Surely a frog from a #2 couldn't be grafted onto the body of a #1? Do you by chance have a #2 instead? Only late model #2s were marked "Bailey" according to Patrick, the early ones were cleanskins like the #1. He advises having a tape measure with you when deciding what number plane you've got. I can't tell how big it is from the photo, but a quick measurement or two will clarify things (or maybe deepen the mystery....)

    Cheers,

What Ian said not a #1 no lateral lever for the blade. The #1 I have is prewar even at that latter stage in their development there was no lateral lever.
