Ahh well, even if it is a No.2, you're better off than I am with my Record No.02 - at least yours has irons (and 75% of a lever cap ).

Still worth the $10 just for the entertainment. Can we see pictures with the frog removed please?

Even a no2 you would more than recoup your money selling the parts I would think.

I am not a tool collector nor would I have any use for this thing. So I will strip it give it a gentle clean with kero nothing more then I will sell it for parts.
    Good buy thumbsucker.
Though the wood parts look damaged keep them as its likely a nice rosewood and when re-glued and cleaned up will look like new.
May come back as a tool collector one day - or a wood worm, a form of justice / karma.
I am sure you will recover your meagre $ outlay many times over based on what others have said here.

TS, so all that is damaged is the lever cap and handle?

Buy a "new" lever cap and make a new handle.

Would be interesting to see what no 2 parts are worth. I have a similar rough smashed up no 2 somewhere. It cost me a lot more than $15. Ill have a look for it .

There was a guy asking about / looking for a rough no 2C the other day on instagram . Some post on Vintage tool shop .

The no 2 is a fair bit longer than a 1 . Still a bit to small for me to use .

It would be nice having memories of some school teacher giving you a no 1 to use as a kid when your hands were tiny . If that's where they got a bit of use .

Rob, there seems to be endless controversy about who used 1s & 2s and for what. Some, at least, of Stanley's blurbs seem to indicate that they were serious tools aimed at serious work. I've never held a #1 in my hands as far as I can recall, most certainly never used one in anger, but I haave had a go with a #2. Indeed it was small, but it was reasonably comfy in my (slightly small side of average) hands.

Up until a coupe of years ago, I always thought of the #1 as just a curio, with no serious applications in general cabinetmaking, but this little rear-bun infill changed my mind. 10.jpg

It has the same width cutter as a 1, but is between the 1 & 2 in length. I wouldn't use it every day, but I certainly use it more than I expected. It would've taken at least twice as long to clean up the couple of small low spots on this large chunk of recycled Hoop I used for this table top with a #4 (which is what I probably would have used for the job before I had my new toy).... 27 Little smoother.jpg

Nice little plane Ian ! Pretty too.
I don't own a no 1 but have held them . They fit in your hand and there is no way adult fingers are getting around the handle like a larger plane in use . The infill style would be much better for the same width .
I don't mind taking narrow shavings of course . I just use part of the curved blade of a no 3. Or part of the curved blade of a spoke shave .

Here is my broken no 2 . Same sort of damage as the $15 one above by the looks.

Wow! Some tools cop a beating, Rob, don't they?! I can imagine the type of severe trauma that might take a chunk out of the side & split the LC in two, but it looks like that lateral adjuster shaft has been deliberately amputated. Maybe that was someone's response to it getting in the way, though I can't see how a sharp end of the shaft would improve matters!

Pity that yours & TS's planes have suffered near-identical injuries (on the same sides, even!), so no chance of your getting one goodie out of the two.......

    Cheers,

Yep I think that finding spare parts and repairing would be best. I had a look for parts and replacement Lever Cap for Stanley No. 2 comes in for around US $80 - $120 plus postage from the US. I suspect it would cost $100's and $100's to replace the broken parts. I think a cheaper option would be to buy a Lever cap from Lie-nielsen and make the Handle from Scratch. The body would be the problem.

An intact No. 2 go for about US $200 to $500. However No 2 TYPE 2 (1869-72) Pre-Lateral is going for US $1200 on eBay.
I think that the No. 2 seems like a nice size and it would be useful. However it will take some time to find parts & repair.

Your prices might be better that across the ditch, but over here I suspect a No.2 with a broken off wing, or visible repair, would fetch under $100.

None-the-less, I'd be very interested to see what Lie-Nielsen would charge for a No.2 lever cap, as I'm keen to get one for my Record No.2.

Vann my meaning regarding value was for an intact No.2 not the one that I have.
