Budget/middle of the road #4/5 planes
I've lucked out and just gotten myself into a joinery/carpentry TAFE course and one of the tools we're required to supply is a #4 or #5 handplane.
This is a tool I would rarely, if ever, use at home at the moment and so don't want to spend a heck of a lot of money on one...$100-$150 (and a few bucks either side) for something that's not a complete steamer (ie:Trojan - have had a pair and hated them). If one day I get serious and need some proper hand planes, I'll spend the big bucks then (mmm...Veritas) but for now I just need something to get through the 16 weeks of classes.
As I already have jointer and thicknesser machines at home I'm thinking (from the little research I've done) that a #4 might be the most useful for finishing rather than a #5 for preparing.
The Irwin Records don't look too bad on the face of things and are the most expensive in my range. Bluhnnings had some bubble packed Stanleys with plastic handles that were a "good" cheapy price ($80-$90 as well as a couple of seriously old and faded boxed Baileys for about the same price.
So, can you fine dark siders correct me on my choice and suggest any other brands or model that might suit?

I have a spare # 4. It's nothing special but should see you through the course.
It's yours for the cost of postage if you want it.
I'll even sharpen the bladeThose were the droids I was looking for.

Jim: Ooh nice. Even with the fair bit of a discount at WWS at the moment (plus shipping) it would have been a bit costly for the amount of use it would have seen.
NCArcher: That's incredibly generous of you and thank you greatly for the offer but I'll pass.
I ended up getting one of the Stanleys for $65 at a stocktake sale this arvo. This way I won't feel so guilty when I don't use it again. I haven't opened it yet but if it needs it I'm geared up to flatten the bottom and will most likely have to give the iron a proper sharpen.
Thanks for the help anyway chaps

Ibc
You could get an IBC blade WITH chip breaker (most important), from Jim Davey. About $94 + $10 postage. One of the best moves I ever made.

I was at the local flea market on Sunday morning and you could not get into the place for old Stanley Planes. There were 100's of them. I would suggest getting something second hand and giving it a bit of a tune up. Really cheap way to get a really good plane.

When you say "local" Chook, local to which 'burb, or sector of Brissie? I've never seen a decent tool for sale at any flea markets over my way. Maybe I just choose the wrong days & get discouraged.
'Course it may be a good thing - as per another thread running in this section, I am trying to reduce my tool numbers, not grow them....
Cheers,IW

I was at the Beenleigh markets. There was plenty of old tools there. Some were in very good condition, but then you pay for the time that went into restoring them. Others needed work and that is where the bargains are. I was amazed at the number of old planes of all types that were for sale and spoke shaves, saws ... almost all needing restoring of course. But that is more than half the fun.
