    Default Butt Chisels

G'day all, I am looking for a set of butt chisels but the only ones I can find are from Lee Valley, Crown or Hamlet (although the crown and hamlet look very similar, maybe the same??). I've heard mixed reports over the Crown/hamlet butt chisels (i.e. it's a bit of a lucky dip if you get good steel or not). Are there any other brands worth considering?

The biggest range of chisels I ever saw is at http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/
They are in NSW so worth a look for you.
    Good hunting.

It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

Thanks robert and dan. The Woodworks stock the Crown set (1/4". 1/2", 3/4" & 1") and two cherries (35mm-60mm). And Carbatec stock the Hamlet. I can't seem to find any other brands around. I seems like nearly every US store stocks the Crown.

Well I got a set of Stanley's from Bunnies.

They're plastic handle unfortunately but they sharpened well and seem to hold an edge o.k. I think I must have just got lucky for once.

Anyway, for the amount of use they get (not much) they work for me.

    1/2 '' 3/4" and 1".

I've also seen Fuller butt chisels in Mitre 10. I've no idea what they are like though.

    Right.

They'd make a good paint tin opener as well then ?

Actually, what are Bahco chisels like? Any good for a general carpenter's chisel?

Not that I'm going to buy any, I'm just curious.

I have the Hamlet set from Carbatec and I like them a lot. Handy - especially for paring and fine fitting. The steel is OK and it takes a decent edge. I touch them up on an MDF disc with green crayon and it works well.

Good value - you could definitely do a lot worse.

As you say, Crown tools have a deserved reputation for extreme ordinariness in steel quality. Unfortunately my skew chisels confirm this widely held belief! Total WOFTAM, IMHO!
