I would start with e-bay

Good Used Tools
Fleabay is always a bit of a pig in a poke, as you are buying blind, and lots of other people's problems end up being sold here.
There are some reputable dealers out there.
Have a look at these three blokes.
I have dealt with all of them and they don't sell junk. Generally they have vetted their planes before offering them for sale, and price them accordingly. If you are after user quality tools as opposed to collector quality, then check their user categories. Their service is quick and reliable.

Jim Davey offers a service relating to used Stanley planes. Back in August he had the following avaolable:
All his planes are fully fettled, sharp and ready to go. He has 3 Stanley
ranges:
1. Bailey - with new Blackwood handle and knob
2. Bedrock - with original Rosewood
3. Premium. Heavy English casting, new Red Gum handle and knob and Academy
M2 HSS iron.
"In Bailey I have #3 - #7 ranging from $160 - $220
In Bedrock I have #603 - #607 ranging from $300 - $400
In Premium I have #4 1/2 @$300 and #6 @ $340
I also have some #2 ($325 - 575) and a #1 @ $1,200"
These from Jim may not be current but give you an idea of what's what. PM me if you want his e-mail address.
Happy Plane hunting.

Local markets are also a good place to look - they often advertise markets in local free newspapers - earn brownie points with SWMBO by suggesting that it might be a fun way to spend aSaturday/Sunday mornng and keep an eye open for a tool stall. At least this way you get to handle the goods....

Check out your local classifieds for garage sales etc. I've managed to pick up some great planes for bargain prices. The best buy I've made so far is a UK Stanley #7 jointer plane that was used by a pro-carpenter (being sold by his grandson who is older then I am), who'd looked after it impeccably - $80! But you have to be quick as usually by the time i call someone's beaten me to it.

I've bought a couple off ebay and haven't really had a problem. Mostly taking a long time to get them once I've paid. Got myself a half decent range of planes now.

I'm a bit confused as to some terms used by the above sellers of 2nd hand planes...
Does "IOB" mean "in original box" ?
"SW" means ??????
"Sweetheart" ???, from what I can gather via the Blood and Gore pages, this refers to a heart somewhere on the plane body, correct?
If looking for user versions, is there an advantage or otherwise to getting English, Canadian, Australian or US versions of Stanley bodies or blades?
One final question, what's so special about Stanley No2's, these seem to be quite sought after and expensive.....
Thanks in Advance

Yes
Sweetheart
On the top of the face of the plane blade
US then English
If you're only after users (ie. not collectables) you will not need either a #1 or #2 Stanley these will cost you thousands unless you have a dead relative who has left a shed full of old tools. Get a #3. #4 1/2, #5, #6, #78 and small block plane.
