Not much has changed in 130-odd years, has it? I suppose the rents have gone even higher, & the material quality has descended even lower - what would the writer of that little epistle have made of particle-boards that self-destruct in less than 15 years???
Cheers,IW

Wonderful writing style. Not florid but simple and descriptive. A very good read!!
And I think what Ian has to say holds true.

The cabinet makers had to come from somewhere. I often wonder if that bloke Chippendale, who left Yorkshire in the hope of making more money in London, ever made anything of himself.
Cheers,
Jim

This thread has brought back a lot of memories for me. My grandparents had a huge dresser made for them when they married by a local cabinet-maker, a friend of theirs. This is a small village I'm talking about. Just down the road was a water-driven sawmill which I suppose supplied most local needs.
In later years I went to see a cabinet maker in the next village to buy a length of pine. His workshop was amazing. He was working by himself by then but above the benches were an amazing variety of handtools that he said had been left by blokes who had worked there. Talk about lost opportunities.Cheers,
Jim
