Carter rebate plane
As I mentioned in another thread today, I have a Carter rebate plane (equivalent to a Stanley #10) which is missing the brass adjuster.
I have spent the morning trying all my Stanley and Record adjusters, but none of them seems to fit - the Carter seems to have a thicker threaded rod for the adjuster to run on.
Is this common for Carter bench planes? Does anyone know where I could get a replacement?
TIA
JeremyCheers

Carter planes have Whitworth threads I belive, so failing finding one.
You could try tapping a stanley one out to suit the carter.

No record lever cap sorry mate.
But there is a brass adjuster for a falcon, which seems to have a thread coarser than the regular stanleys...different teeth per inch.....but the rods not thicker if thats what you mean....you can have that if you like.
Gota go have tea with the misses. Seeya.

Firtsly you will find the adjuster in the carters is left hand thread and it isn't whitworth.
All the fixing screws are indeed whitworth but not the adjusters.
There are two diferent adjusters in carter planes.... the skinny one, that I think is campatable with one of the stanley threads and others ( don't treat that as gospel) and the thick one that isn't the same as anyother plane adjuster known to man.
Let me know if you find two because I'm missing one too.... I'm at the point of junking another plane just to get the adjuster.
Oh usualy the adjuster ans the threaded rod are missing together.
Oh... for some reason they seem to fall out and go missing:confused:

Thanks Soundman. I will get the vernier out and measure the adjuster rod and look closely at the thread before going any further.
If it is LH thread, I suppose one save will be to drill out a spare Stanley adjuster and use a LH thread tap that is close - or do as you propose and get another Carter with a thick adjuster and junk it to get the adjuster.
Plenty to think about here, so don't expect to hear of a fix shortly!!!
If I have a go at the first ( and there isn't much to lose except one spare adjuster) and it works I will let you know (esp if I succeed in getting a suitable LH thread tap!).Cheers

If its a fat carter thread drilling out isn't an option as the stanlley threads are well aand truly clearance in the hole.
Then as well as being left handed all these adjuster threads are very obscure thread pitches.
there is only one option & that is to find a carter adjuster and rod to suit.

A mongrel yields gold
I picked up a weird looking part plane at a market today - it is a 4 1/2, the lever cap says Falcon Pope, the cap iron and blade say Stanley and the body says Carter! A real pedigree mongrel!!~!
So for a princely outaly ($10) I bought this walking spare parts kit. And guess what - the brass adjuster fitted the Carter rebate plane and I was also able to fit the depth adjustment lever. So all I now need to do is to replace the cracked handle and set it up and away we will go with a Carter rebate plane!!Cheers

As promised
Here is the Carter 01 rebate plane (equivalent to Stanley #10) before renovation - a couple of pics fully assembled and a few of it in pieces.
The first steps - rust removal - the big bits will go in the electrolysis bath and the little ones in vinegar.
Also the tote - as it is a nice clean break I am going to try to repair the original one first and reinforce it by drilling out the long screw hole and epoxying in a brass tube the full length of the tote.
More pictures as I go along
Cheers
Jeremy
PS Please excuse picture quality - the pics were taken on my phone.Cheers

All dressed up
Here are some photos of the Carter.
In the end I decided not to redo the handles (aside from gluing the tote back together). The reason is that the original Carter label is still intact on the tote and I wasn't ready to get rid of that yet.
The paint is a rustproofing epoxy - the blue is not quite the original carter colour (as far as one can tell from theflakes of old paint around), but I thought that it came up quite well.
It is all sharpened and ready to go, but I had to go furniture shopping today with SWMBO, so test driving will have to wait for another time.
Cheers

Looks good Jeremy. Thanks for the photos.
Still like the idea of owning one of those types. Like to hear how it goes.
