Mine are definitely much better than .1 but are only 150 mm/6".
Plastic ones have their place. I have an ancient set of pressed steel ones. If I'm making rough (+/- 1mm) measurements say on a cylinder and have a good chance of dropping the caliper I'll use the steel ones. You can get plastic ones for $3ish. They are handy around salt water and other chemicals also. Disposable. If I'm 20' up a ladder, or climbing on a furnace, or under a car or in the middle of a big machine I won't take precision measureing tools unless I must.
As usual depends on what your doing. Right tool for the situation and all that.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

Now to annoy people, I have in the past picked up Verniers at Garage sales etc, 300mm Mitutoyo + 150mm no name digital for $30 and last Saturday 150mm Mitutoyo in it's plastic cover as part of a box of toys for $3
When I am sizing turned objects on the lathe, I'll use the stainless Mit's as I have managed to burn a couple of plastic verniers. The digital is used for anything else. I have also picked up 3 micrometers for a grand total of $10 . . .Last edited by Pat; 20th January 2009 at 01:02 PM. Reason: I cannot spell!

The plastic 1's are great for cutting down to mount to jigs etc. Cheap, easy to modify & disposable.

Aldi calipers
I am with Socrates.....I bought a pair of Aldi calipers for $20 expecting them to be as mad as a hatter. I have had them for 4-5 years and they are repeatable and accurate. I would have them as one of the most used tools in my garage, on the bench always.
Cheers,
Anthony
