Stuart, there's ways of compensating for things being out of square.
One method is strips of 80 gram paper under the close or far edge to hold the part "just right" at 90° to the blade. Remember it;'s the blade that does the cutting, not the sole.
However, the better solution is to dedicate a plane to the shooting board. Adjust it to be square to your board and then leave it alone.
Means you need more than one planeregards from Alberta, Canada

If I ever get my finger out, I will fix up the Bailey (lots of surface rust etc., etc) and then I'll dedicate one plane to the shooting board.
